Camper Behavior Management This Kid Is Driving Me Crazy!!!

Managing Behavior POSITIVE BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT VERSUS DISIPLINE Why do they do that!

WAYS TO GET RESPECT FROM YOUR CAMPERS OR HOW TO GET THEM TO DO WHAT YOU WANT!

GET RESPECT 1. GOALS - MAKE YOUR EXPECTATIONS CLEAR 2. COMMUNICATE 3. ASSUME YOUR ROLE AS AN AUTHORITY FIGURE 4. EARN THEIR RESPECT RESPECT THEM AND THEY’LL RESPECT YOU 5. BARGAINING - MAY BE EFFECTIVE

GET RESPECT - CONTINUED 6. PRAISE - Catch Them Being Good 7. LOOK FOR CHANCES TO PRAISE 8. BE FUN! 9. GIVE DIRECTIONS 10. MAKE SURE THE RULES ARE CLEAR 11. DE-EMPHASIZE COMPETITION AND WINNING AND EMPHASIZE SUCCESS

SEIZE THE CHANCE TO BE A “COUNSELOR”

PREVENTING TROUBLE IS A GREAT SKILL

TAKE NOTHING FOR GRANTED

NEVER ASSUME THAT CAMPERS KNOW WHAT IS EXPECTED

IF YOU MUST HAVE RULES MAKE THEM CLEAR MAKE THEM KNOWN FROM THE BEGINNING GIVE THEM WITH HUMOR AND KINDNESS HAVE AS FEW AS POSSIBLE

What if they do something wrong EVALUATE FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS WHAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM? MAKE SURE THE CAMPERS PHYSICAL NEEDS ARE MET MAKE SURE THE CAMPERS EMOTIONAL NEEDS ARE MET

5 STEPS WHEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM 1. Consequences - think ahead 2. Confrontation ask for a better decision 3. Separation 4. Isolation 5. Amputation - some programs are not for everyone

THE DEADLY DOZEN MISTAKES WE MAKE WITH KIDS

DO NOT PUNISH! TEACH DO NOT YELL AND SCREAM DO NOT INTIMIDATE DO NOT LIE OR DECEIVE DO NOT TRY TO CHANGE THE CHILD, ONLY THE BEHAVIOR DO NOT HURT A CHILD’S FEELINGS

DO NOT ACT LIKE A GROWNUP DO NOT ACT LIKE AN INFANT DO NOT LECTURE A CHILD WHEN HE IS UPSET DO NOT TALK ABOUT A CHILD’S BEHAVIOR IN FRONT OF OTHER CAMPERS

DO NOT PUNISH THE WHOLE GROUP FOR THE BEHAVIOR OF 1 OR 2 DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SAY NO!

REMEMBER! THERE ARE NO BAD CAMPERS! ONLY BAD BEHAVIORS!

PLAYING IT SAFE RISK MANAGEMENT

Start Out On The Right Foot Set the stage Happy, healthy & safe Camp is a testing time for all (sleep, new activities, excitement, lots of personalities, STRESSFUL!)

Your Role Take care of yourself Set an example - Your Actions Speak So Loudly, They Cannot Hear You Say A Word! Ask for help Prepare

POLICIES & PROCEDURES KNOW THEM SUPPORT THEM OUR GET OUT TELL THE CAMPERS LIVE BY THEM

VIGILANCE You Must Be There!

Guidelines For Contact Personal Bubble Rule No put downs No hitting No touching against a camper’s will What is ok contact? Would Mom Approve? When in doubt…don’t Get Help

You Have The Power Over Campers Use Your Power For Good!
