Interpreting Workplace Documents Principles of Architecture and Construction

Bell Ringer Activity Students, as you enter, please take your slip of paper with a letter and number written on it. Find the station in the room that has that same letter and number on 1 of the sheets. This will be your team for today. Teacher: This is “Introduction” portion to be completed as student enter the classroom. Refer to pg 5 of the Lesson Plan.

Refresh Your Vocabulary As a Class, let’s refresh our memory on a few key words: Construction documents Plan Section Elevation Detail Drawing scale Difference between ‘ and “ Teacher: Lead a Class Discussion briefly refreshing everyone’s recollection of what these words mean.

Begin Your Station Rotation! With your group, you will cycle through all 6 stations of construction documents. You will have 5 minutes at each station. You and your teammates will complete the handout by following the instructions and answering the questions for each station. Teacher: Keep time or delegate 1 student to be the time keeper. Active monitoring and assistance as needed as you walk around the room. This is the main portion of the lesson, and should take about 30 minutes.

Summary What did we find out? What sort of building do we think this is? Is it a big building or a small building? How many floors does it have? Can we measure the area of the Building’s Footprint? What sheet did we find the Footprint on? What sheet did we find the Door Schedule on? Teacher, prompt students in the closing “Wrap Up” class discussion.

We’ve Only Just Started! We have LOTS more fun with reading these documents coming up… We will all have full understanding of what everything is and why it’s drawn like it is. Everyone will be able to pick up construction documents and understand them!
