Transition Town Totnes Food Energy Heart & Soul Local govt Ceremony TRESCO Publicity Network Events Communication & IT Solar WH challenge Local food directory Nut trees Arts Transport Housing TTT Group Focalisers Group Central functions Organise Did run for a long time without being legal, run as community group with bank account Decided to have small central group as limited company with charitable status, fairly conventional, TTT ltd legally responsible for building, bank accounts, insurance, employment contracts, all that does is provide core services to TTT itself. It’s the funnel through which funding applications can go, its basically a small central support service which provides services to the rest of TTT This is what the Gaia foundation of Western Australlia do cos they tried to incorporate the whole lot and it didn’t work But the rest of TTT isn’t incorporated and is separate and independent Management structure is 4 unpaid key people ensure things happen managerially, this should really get done by TTT ltd as it gets more established. Is there a recommended plan for a management structure which could be modelled by other groups Transition is not going to happen entirely on voluntary scale Either the world wakes up enough to pay people enough money to do this stuff, or it may not happen We don’t dictate anything about how those groups organise themselves. There are some requirements to setting up the working groups, then its up to the group to decide how they get represented. TTT ltd is service support, doesn’t make any decisions for any of the rest of TTT, just provides support services, also, network is trying to sort out its own structure, membership and processes, operating at regional, national and international scales across all themes This is just totnes, look at other places like lewes, bristol etc. to see how they do it

Wider community Projects Public Events Working groups Central support Get involved Get involved Inspire & inform Attend & $ Projects Autonomous Doing Public Events Project support Reps attend Synergy Working groups Autonomous Coordination of area Ideas & events Central support This diagram shows flows as well as structure The general flow of transition projects goes something like this: From the centre, with contributions from different working groups & individuals we create a programme of events including films, speakers, workshops, public discussions, visits to gardens / houses, making and doing days, open space This continues to draw in, deepen & help people move through stages of change People from wider community come in to projects or working groups Working groups send reps to core groups which shapes overall direction & shares information & inspiration The whole process is something I’ve called “centre” but would rather call “support” or something else. In John Croft’s model this is called the Project Support Project. Share info Inform decisions Reps attend Share info Sets priorities Supports meeting Core group Strategy Coordination 22

Stages of Transition Initiatives Starting out (early stage)— wild and brainstorming. Deepening — Now we are becoming Transition ________ Connecting –  how do we broaden and connect with the community around us Building — Things start to step up – social enterprise, strategic local infrastructure, community ownership of assets. Daring to Dream— what would it look like scaled up? Next bit about strategic & focussing One is supporting, need to set a direction and go there

Stages of Transition Initiatives Starting Out Coming together as groups – the importance of getting the group things right. Sometimes we dash in and start without getting the group stuff together. Measurement — how are we going to document what we are doing is working or not? Keeping an eye on how we are doing. Arts and creativity is in there as well. Building Partnerships Doing fishbowl events, nice way of doing deepening enquiry rather than polarising debate, nice way of getting people to have conversations about charged issues Have 200 people on mailing lists, counsellors, etc giving mentoring for activists, now giving massages too, also mediation skills The more we deepen in this work, the more people get attracted to it Attending to the deepening of the group

Stages of Transition Initiatives Deepening Local food initiatives — they are usually first. Personal resilience — Be mindful of how YOU are doing -- creating a balance of doing Transition and taking care of yourself and your family and earning a living. Reduce burnout. Unleashing – May not need to be called “unleashing.” Doing fishbowl events, nice way of doing deepening enquiry rather than polarising debate, nice way of getting people to have conversations about charged issues Have 200 people on mailing lists, counsellors, etc giving mentoring for activists, now giving massages too, also mediation skills The more we deepen in this work, the more people get attracted to it Attending to the deepening of the group

Stages of Transition Initiatives Connecting Street by street behavior change — (Transition Streets) Meaningful Maps — Interesting maps, local food resources, etc. Storytelling — The power of getting people to share their stories. Doing fishbowl events, nice way of doing deepening enquiry rather than polarising debate, nice way of getting people to have conversations about charged issues Have 200 people on mailing lists, counsellors, etc giving mentoring for activists, now giving massages too, also mediation skills The more we deepen in this work, the more people get attracted to it Attending to the deepening of the group

Stages of Transition Initiatives Building Things start to step up. If we are serious about this, nobody is going to do this on our behalf. There will need to be new businesses, new infrastructure put into place. Social Enterprise — Transition groups setting up local food businesses, energy, community breweries. Strategic local infrastructure — what are the viable businesses that the place needs? Food processing? Community ownership of assets — become our own developers. Allow that money to cycle locally and not go out.

Stages of Transition Initiatives Daring to Dream • What would it look like if it all went totally big? Own energy company? Investing in local community rather than large outside banks? • Investing in Transition — We need some serious investment in this. Loan funds to local resilient infrastructure. • Policy for Transition — what would it look like? A “Transition Enabling Act”. Try to get a bigger picture of where this would go.
