Los Días de los Muertos In Meso-American culture, the days October 31 (Halloween), November 1 (All Saints’ Day), and November 2 (all Souls Day, or Días de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead) are marked by a uniquely colorful religious festival. The festival celebrates the cycle of life in two ways: 1. honoring ancestors by creating ofrendas (offerings) 2. redecorating gravesites in cemeteries and mocking death.

Instead of creating the traditional decorations of skulls and skeletons for the day of the dead, we are going to create a butterfly tree. In Aztec culture, butterflies were believed to be messengers from the living to the dead. Each of you will decorate a butterfly. These butterflies will be placed on a butterfly tree in your class. This is a good way to pay tribute to someone who has made a difference in your life or to someone who is special to you.

Assignment Decorate a butterfly. Put a picture of someone you know or know about who has passed away on the front of the butterfly. On the back of your butterfly, you will write a brief description of this person. Be sure to write clearly so that I can read it. Your description needs to answer the following questions:

Write all answers in complete English What is their name? What relation if any is this person to you? What is something good that you will remember about this person? What was their favorite thing to eat? What was their favorite hobby? Write all answers in complete English sentences.
