What is Combined Science?

Rationale To meet the needs of students with a strong interest in science For students taking two science subjects, ONE of them is chosen from the three specialised subjects of Physics, Chemistry or Biology The students will study part of the other two subjects by a combined approach to build a broad and comprehensive knowledge in science

How is Combined Science (CS) related to Bio/Chem/Phy? Chemistry Elective Part Chemistry Part of CS Compulsory Part Subject Content of CS’s Chem part is about ½ that of Chemistry

Bio Chem Phy Biology Part Chemistry Physics Taking 2 parts only Combined Science (Phy, Chem) Combined Science (Bio, Phy) Combined Science (Chem, Bio)

Possible subject combinations: Combined Science – for students wishing to take 2 elective subjects in the Science Education KLA Possible subject combinations: + Econ / Geog / ICT / Lit. in Eng / Ch. Hist / History/ BAFS …. Room for learning in other KLAs Combined Science (Phy, Chem) + Bio Combined Science (Bio, Phy) + Chem Combined Science (Chem, Bio) + Phy Broad and comprehensive learning in Science

Core Subjects : English, Chinese, Mathematics, Liberal Studies 3 Elective Subjects Mathematics Extension

Mathematics Extension Module 1 : Calculus & Statistics Module 2 : Algebra & Calculus

Broaden the knowledge in Mathematics Universities Admission Requirements HKU – Engineering, Information System, Actuarial Science, Quantitative Finance HKCU – Quantitative Finance, Risk Management, Engineering HKUST – Substitution for one Elective Subject

Some observation found in the mock selection ACC CH HIST FIN ECO REL GEO E LIT ICT BIO CHEM PHY BP BC PC 2 5 4 7 8 6 1 9 3 10 only Econ & Bio are chosen as subjects in Block 1, but her allocation rank is not competitive enough can’t allocate the 3rd subject.  ICT – 1st choice BAFS (ACC) – 2nd choice PHY -3rd choice BAFS( Fin) – 4th Ch. Hist – 5th E.Lit - 6th  (same block as ICT) (same block as ACC) (same block as ICT) (same block as ACC)

Chem – 1st choice Bio – 2nd choice PHY -3rd choice Phy+Bio – 4th ACC CH HIST FIN ECO REL GEO E LIT ICT BIO CHEM PHY BP BC PC 9 10 7 8 2 1 3 4 5 6 Chem – 1st choice Bio – 2nd choice PHY -3rd choice Phy+Bio – 4th Bio+Chem – 5th Phy+Chem- 6th Geog- 7th ICT – 8th ranking not competitive enough No subject can be allocated to block 1  not compatible with Phy+Bio Solution:- Replace Phy+Bio with Phy+Chem in block 1 , take ICT in block 3  (same block as Phy+Bio)

Tips for Choosing elective subjects only students who are top 35% in Mathematics of the Form can choose to take Mathematics module (module 1 or 2) Students taking Mathematics module are NOT allowed to take Chinese History consider Combined Science (Phy+Chem) or (Chem+Bio) in block 1

Tips for Choosing elective subjects Block 1 Bio Chem Phy & Chem Chem & Bio Econ E&RS Hist Block 2 Lit. in Eng. Geog BAFS Block 3 Phy Phy & Bio Chin Hist ICT Fully filled in the mock selection Fully filled . A better ranking is needed for successful allocation almost fully filled (39/40) quite full (33/40)

Important reminder :- Students are required to fill-in an on-line application form for your choice of S4 subjects. Username and password should be the same as that used for “e-class.” Please complete the on-line S4 Subject Selection Form on or before 21 May 2010 Both student and parent have to sign on a printed copy of your choice.

Mechanism of F.4 Streaming Students will be ranked according to their scores in annual average mark Annual mark : [ 1st term mark x 30% + 2nd term mark x 70%]

Priority of Streaming will be given to students with all subjects passed in the Annual result higher marks in Annual average mark Student's choices Student’s 1st three choices will be entertained as far as possible unless the subject she selected is full. Student 4th – 10th choices will then be considered until 3 subjects have been allocated
