Samoyed By: Colin Smith

History of the Samoyed Was developed by the Samoyede people of Siberia. They used the dogs for herding reindeer, hunting and hauling sledges as well as guarding. The Samoyed was highly cherished by the people because they depended of the dogs for survival.

Samoyed characteristics Medium to large Prick ears Fox like face Thick coat Curled tail Mostly pure white Very muscular

What group is the Samoyed in? The Samoyed is in the working group. They are also considered to be in the Spitz group They can be used for herding, sledding, weight pull, backpacking

Samoyed’s temperament Good natured Loves people, especially little kids They demand to be with their people inside or where ever their people happen to be at a given time. Barks and howls quite a bit Gets along with other animals

Is the Samoyed right for you? If you want a dog who… If you don’t want to deal with… Is a medium to large size Is robust and spirited and thrives on vigorous exercise and athletic activities, especially in cold weather Is usually good-natured with everyone A very loyal and gentle Providing a goodly amount of exercise Rowdiness and exuberant jumping, especially when young Heavy shedding A lot of barking The Samoyed is the right breed for you! This probably isn’t the right breed for you!

Grooming Brushing is almost an everyday thing because they shed so much. Keep the dog busy by giving them a toy or bone while brushing. Always brush before bathing because the hair can turn into knots. Then brush again after the dog is dry

Average price and litter size The price of a Samoyed depends on location. For example: In Ontario Canada, the average price for a Samoyed puppy is $400 The dogs can be from about $100-Several thousand. Keeping in mind, the about you pay is usually the quality of the dog. The average litter size is anywhere from 5 to 9 puppies.

Recommended food The Samoyed is not as hearty an eater as most breeds similar in size. Their light appetite can be attributed to the scarcity of food in the arctic climate of their native country. The quantity and type of food for a Samoyed depends on the age, size, amount of exercise and if the dog has any medical issues. Commercial dry food is convenient and has a long shelf life. Canned food has more flavor than commercial food but is mostly water. Raw food diets are also a healthy option for Samoyed but can be expensive. Fresh drinking water is a must to keep a healthy dog.

Life span The average life expectancy is about 12-15 years

Diseases that effect the Samoyed breed Samoyed dog breed is prone to health problems like: Bloating Hip Dysplasia Progressive Retinal Atrophy Hypothyroidism Bleeding Disorders Allergies Skin Problems
