This slide for teacher only Display the following website, and ask students if they have heard the news about the new disease. They will inevitably say “no” and then show them the website. http://bit.ly/1Kcc8FQ Once you have read the story to the students, facilitate a discussion about what should be done about the new disease. The purpose of this grabber is to instill FEAR in the students to make a connection to the fear of communism during the Cold war

This slide for teacher only Once the discussion has served it purpose, lead a discussion to connect the fear of the “Red Flu” to McCarthyism. If having Asthma creates a greater risk of carrying the Red Flu, what should be done to do the people with Asthma? Removed from society? Etc… Link these ideas to the Red Scare/McCarthy hearings and fear of government infiltration by communists.

The Cold War EQ: What was the impact of the rise of Communism on the foreign policy of the United States?

Building the Ultimate Team Imagine that Tom Brady and Matt Ryan wanted to build the ultimate football team In order to build their team, they would have to compete with each other for the best athletes With a partner, make a list of things Brady and Ryan could do to better their team.

Ultimate Team: Cold War Edition The Two Teams: USA vs. USSR Marshal Plan- Congress Truman Doctrine

Cold War The Cold War was a struggle between the western democratic nations (mainly the United States) and the communist nation of the Soviet Union (and later China) for the political supremacy of the world. Ideological War. Following World War II, the United States and the other Allies divided Germany into four occupation zones. Rivalries for influence over the German territories led to disagreements during the occupation of Germany by the French, British, Russians, and Americans. Thus beginning the Cold War. Over four decades, competition between the United States and the USSR involved many other countries aligned with one of the two superpowers

Marshall Plan Europe lay in ruins after WWII. The traditional European powers were physically, financially, and emotionally unable to reconstruct the continent. The Marshall Plan: 13 billion dollars given to European countries by the U.S. to rebuild economies. Why give all that $$ to Europe?

Containment Policy Containment Policy: US foreign policy regarding communism. The goal was to prevent the spread of communism and keep it contained where it already existed. Truman Doctrine: United States would provide political, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat from communism. First used for Greece and Turkey.

Korean War China had fallen to communism The Korean Peninsula was divided at the 38th Parallel US forces helped defend Democratic South Korea against invading Communist North Korean forces

Back to our Teams… If you were Tom Brady how would you defeat Russell Wilson’s team? Legal and Illegal Ways

Arms Race Why is there a need to build weapons following WWII? Competition?

Space Race The USSR started the Space Race with the United States in 1957, when they launched Sputnik, the first unmanned spacecraft to escape earth’s gravity Why would this freak out Americans?
