DORYPHOROS BY POLYKLEITOS Doryphoros (= the spear bearer) This statue represents the embodiment of the vision of the artist concerning the ideal statue of a nude male athlete or warrior. The artist wasn’t content to simply render a figure that stands naturally; his aim was to impose order on human movement, to make it beautiful and perfect. The sculptor was the first to write a treatise on art - the “Kanon” - a guide to sculpture, based on the proportions of the human being, its perfection, the ideal image of human beings through numbers and relative numbers; a mathematical system: the head was 1/8 –one eighth- of the total height. The essence of his treatise was: the harmony of the opposites, through the counterpoise: the right arm is free, the right leg carries the weight. The left leg is free, the left arm carries the weight. The aim: to show a natural and relaxed position. Doryphoros, Roman marble copy, after a bronze original of 450-440 BC.
