Homework Year 1 – Spellings and Reading Year 2 – Spellings, Reading and Maths Spellings linked to phonics, key words and mis-spelt words from their work. All may have occasional homework related to current topics or news.

Reading Reading a book more than once – fluency, expression and comprehension. Complete the “Book Worm” pages at the end of Reading Record Book, encouraging elaboration on answers. Y2s – Reading activities to complete. (See next slide) At end of y2 children assessed on COMPREHENSION as well as fluency. Ask your child “open ended” questions and encourage answers in full sentences. Please fill in Reading Record Book.

Reading Activities – Y2 How well have you understood your book? Once you have read your book, you could do an activity based around it. Here are some suggestions to help or you could think of something else on your own. 1. Write a letter to the main character of the book. 2. Write a different ending for the book. 3. You might wish to draw a picture of part of the story or information and write a sentence about why it is important. 4. Create a travel brochure for the setting of the story. If it is a non-fiction book you could create an information brochure / poster. 5. Create a book cover, including illustrations, and some of the characters.

More ideas…. 6. In a few sentences summarise the book / story for younger students or your class mates. 7. Write a letter to someone recommending the book you have just read. 8. make a list of new, unusual, or interesting words or phrases found in your book and their meanings. 9. Write five questions that could be used to test other students’ understanding of the story. Make sure you provide a list of the answers. 10. Write a letter to the author of your book. You could even address it to the publisher and send it. Or, see if the author has a website and email it. 11. Give a dramatic reading of a scene in the book to someone at home. Try to use lots of expression. 12. Describe in detail a character from the story. It can be a picture with describing words / phrases around it. 13. After reading an information book, write down five facts you have learnt – in full sentences please.

KS1 Teacher Assessments and Tests. Teacher assessment is on going through out years 1 and 2. At the end of Y2 assessment data is collated. Teacher assessment – maths, writing (including grammar and spellings), reading and science. Children will be assessed against following 3 grades: Working towards Expected Level, Working at Expected Level and Working at Greater Depth.

Tests At end of Y2 children will complete tests in following subjects – maths and reading (as far as we know) These are done in the classroom. Anytime in May. We make it relaxed and non stressful. Tests only inform TEACHER ASSESSMENT – not decide it!!!!
