Practice Prewriting You are 3rd graders. As a class, we will select a topic. (Fire and Water) We will work through the four box system to create a list of possible nouns, adjectives, and participles on our topic. (Fire and Water) We will create this list together. We will later use this list to create our class draft.

Prewriting Assessment You are still 3rd graders. Select a topic containing two opposite ideas. Think about how these items look, how you feel about the items, synonyms and anonyms, and actions those items do.

You will create your own list of nouns, adjectives, and participles for your own diamante poem. Work through the four box system. Work alone. The teachers will be walking around if you have any questions.

Jincey Hall Drafting GPS: ELA3W1- The student develops competency in the writing process. The student… f. Begins to use specific sensory details (e.g., strong verbs, adjectives) to enhance descriptive effect. PLO: Students will independently construct a diamante poem correctly using nouns, adjectives, and participles from a graphic organizer.

Diamante Form “Diamond Poems” Line 1: one noun as the subject   Line 2: two adjectives describing the subject Line 3: three participles (ending in –ing) telling about the subject Line 4: four nouns: first two related to the subject & second two related to the opposite of the subject Line 5: three participles telling about the opposite of the subject Line 6: two adjectives describing the opposite of the subject Line 7: one noun that is the opposite of the subject Adapted by Tonja Root, Ed.D., Valdosta State University, Valdosta, GA

(fire & water) The teacher and students will write the poem together as a class. A second poem can be written if needed. Click for Practice Website
