Lead Off Activity Example of how socialization reflects the norms of the times: Proper Manners for Dating: A man should not sit down at the table in a restaurant until the woman is seated A man should always pull out a woman’s chair for her and see that she is served first A man should never let a woman carry anything heavy, she should only carry a small package and her coat A man should help a woman put on and take off her coat A man always leads when dancing A many should always open a door for a woman and let her pass in front of him

Review Homework Take out your homework and have it on your desk Look at your notes from yesterday Take a look at page 117

Symbolic Interactionism and Socialization Key Concepts: The Self-Concept The Looking-glass self Significant others Role taking The generalized other

Self-concept and Looking-glass self Definition of Self-Concept: An image of yourself as having an identity separate from other people Alt. Def: The idea or mental image one has of oneself and one’s strengths, weaknesses, status, etc. Alt. Def: Self-image Definition of looking-glass self: A self concept based on our idea of others’ judgments of us Ex: Young children learn quickly that causing some disturbance when adult visitors are present turns attention from the guests to themselves

How Does the Looking-glass Process Work? 3 stage process CONSTANTLY taking place We imagine how we appear to others We imagine the reaction of others to our (imagined) appearance We evaluate ourselves according to how we imagine others have judged us Result: Positive or negative self-evaluation

An Example of the Looking-Glass Self Scenario: You have a new teacher you want to impress. 1. In class, as you are making a comment on the assignment, you have an image of your performance (stage 1) 2. After finishing your comments, you think your teacher is disappointed (stage 2) 3. Because you wanted your teacher to be impressed, you feel bad about yourself (stage 3)

Can the Looking Glass be Distorted? Any examples? What about from the scenario above?

More Looking-glass Self Examples! Eleanor Roosevelt quote In the morning do you get dressed for yourself or for how others will see you? If not for rules and expectations, would you dress differently than you do? How and why? Is there people we use as mirrors more than others?

Significant Others Definition: Ex: For a child - Ex: For a teenager – The people whose judgments are most important to our self- concepts Ex: For a child - Mother, father, grandparent, teachers, and playmates Ex: For a teenager – Peers  Ex: Adults - Spouses, parents, friends, ministers, employers, etc.

On-demand Writing In 1 paragraph that you will hand in: Describe yourself without referring to physical features, but rather focusing on values, attitudes, beliefs, and personality. *No short form writing. Use correct grammar, punctuation, etc. Once you are finished: Write out who your significant others are: Why are they so important? How have they helped to shape your self-concept?

Role Taking We all carry on silent conversations with ourselves…. True or False? Through these conversations we can imagine the thoughts, emotions, and behavior of others in any social situation Definition of Role Taking: Assuming the viewpoint of another person and using that viewpoint to shape the self-concept

How Does the Ability for Role Taking Develop? 3 stage process Imitation Stage – Children begin to imitate behaviors without understanding why Play stage – Children act in ways they imagine other people would Game stage – Children anticipate the actions of others based on social rules *Example on the bottom of page 118

When do we Start Acting out of Principle? During the game stage a child’s self-concept, attitudes, beliefs, and values gradually come to depend LESS on individuals and MORE on general concepts This CHANGE is called a generalized other: An integrated conception of the norms, values, and beliefs of one’s community or society So…. What is the self?

Self Has two parts Jim Carrey video Me and I Jim Carrey video Me: The part of the self form through socialization I: The part of the self that accounts for unlearned, spontaneous acts Which of these did Genie have and which of these did she not have?
