Mentoring, PD Planning & Goal-Setting John C. Anzul, Ed.D. Asst. Supt. C&I August, 2016

Mentor to be assigned by Principal Mentor Training – V. Pellington Mentoring Mentoring needed if you were hired under a Certificate of Eligibility (CE); or CEAS Mentor to be assigned by Principal Mentor Training – V. Pellington

Mentoring (Cont.) Novice teachers with a CE must meet with their mentors at least once per week, for the first 8 weeks Novice teachers with a CEAS must meet with their mentors at least once per week, for the first 4 weeks Additional hours are then scheduled for the remainder of the school year, on a regular and ongoing basis

Professional Development Plan (PDP) Goals to be established collaboratively with your principal or supervisor Each certified staff member sets three (3) PD goals There are District goals*, building goals, and departmental/grade-level/team or personal goals with which you should be aligned Goals should be about your growth—not student growth Goals should include something related to your Student Growth Objective (SGO) Make your goals measurable

District Professional Development Goals To increase student achievement by developing, implementing and evaluating a common practice of designing cognitively engaging, high-level, student- centered tasks that are measurable and aligned to the standards. To increase student achievement by developing, implementing and evaluating a common practice of purposeful differentiated questioning to assess and advance all students through the learning process. To increase student achievement by developing, implementing and evaluating a common practice that advances each student’s ability to construct logical arguments that require them to cite evidence.

Goals Must Be Based Upon the Professional Standards for Teachers www.state.nj.us/education/profdev/profstand

Keep a Running Tally of Your Progress on Each Goal

Progress on Goals At a minimum progress on goals will be reviewed with the Principal as part of your Summary Evaluation Progress for NT teachers is monitored more frequently A discussion about progress on goals should be part of Observation Conferences

Engage in Personal Goal-Setting Be honest in your self-assessment Push yourself to the limit—this is your time to shine Be open-minded and listen to critiques

Engage in Personal Goal-Setting (Cont.) Adopt a positive attitude (essential for a role model) Work on building relationships with students, parents, and other colleagues

Remember why we’re here – our awesome responsibility
