Maths in Early Years and Key Stage 1

Teaching in school using a practical approach

EYFS Year 1 Emerging > Expected > Exceeding > Mastery Number and Calculation Geometry and Measures Fractions Number Shape, Space and Measure

Early Years Foundation Stage Language is important to help learn mathematical names and terms Noticing detail helps to look for similarities, differences and patterns Practical activities help to build thinking skills to solve problems

Number What does a number sound like? How can we represent a number? What does a number look like?

Numbers are everywhere! Cardinal Numbers – for counting 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s (Year 1) Ordinal Numbers – for ordering Nominal Numbers – for naming

Place Value

Calculations

Using real everyday objects which children know 2. Moving on to pictures to represent those objects 3. Using and recording numbers

Shape, Space, Measures and Geometry Similarities and differences Sorting, organising, grouping, ordering Shape Size Capacity Weight Time Money Position Distance

Fractions Using ½ and ¼

Ways to help at home HAVE FUN! Look for numbers wherever you are, count, add on, take away. Ask for help with jobs using real objects – washing, shopping, cooking, sharing a meal, planning the day. Sing songs and rhymes – let your child teach you! Read stories together, play games. Look for details in shapes, patterns, pictures, foods HAVE FUN!

Maths in year 2

Working at the expected standard Partition two-digit numbers into different combinations of tens and ones. Add 2 two-digit numbers using concrete apparatus. Subtract mentally a two-digit number from another two-digit number when there is no regrouping required (e.g. 74-33). Recognise the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. Recall and use the multiplication and division facts for the 2,5 and 10 multiplication tables to solve simple problems.

Identify 1/3, ¼, ½, 2/4. ¾ and know that all parts must be equal parts of the whole. Use different coins to make the same amount. Read scales in divisions of ones, twos, fives and tens in practical situations where all the numbers on the scale are given. Read the time on a clock to the nearest 15 minutes. Describe the properties of 2-D and 3-D shapes. Notes- Copies of working at greater depth within the expected standards are in the class. SATs papers are also there.

Ways to help at home Try to be “Maths Aware”. Try to talk about when you use maths at home. Play games with cards, dominos and board games. Sort the washing out! Pair socks for patterns, counting in twos and recognising odd and even numbers. Look for numbers when walking to school (e.g. house numbers and car registration numbers).

Ways to help at home Collect money and pay for items at the shops Ways to help at home Collect money and pay for items at the shops. Talk about fractions when cutting food. Look at shapes all around you (2-D and 3-D). Cook together. Tell the time, all of the time! Percy Parker for times tables. Have fun with maths!
