What is a home? 9/15/2017 Ask children to think about what a home is. © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017

Is this a home? 9/15/2017 Encourage pupils to discuss: What makes a home? What assumptions do people make based on where someone stays? How it might feel to stay in different types of accommodation? Consider the difference between a home and somewhere to stay. © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017

Where did Sam sleep when he didn’t have a home? 9/15/2017 Where did Sam sleep when he didn’t have a home? In the story, Sam first slept rough before finding temporary accommodation. He also thought about asking for help from his parents and friends – perhaps staying with them temporarily. Discuss what other options Sam might have had and what would be good or bad about those options. © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017

Where do people who are homeless sleep? 9/15/2017 Where do people who are homeless sleep? on the streets in their car on a friend’s sofa camping in temporary accommodation Some examples of where people who are homeless may sleep are included. Consider the pros and cons of these and other options. On the street: No cost Close to amenities Lack of safety and security Can’t keep many belongings Cold & risk of exposure Uncomfortable & noisy Bad for physical & mental wellbeing No address means getting benefits or a job is difficult Risk of assault and abuse On a friend’s sofa (sofa-surfing): Cheap Safe/Warm Companionship Inconvenience Lack of privacy Impact on friendship Benefits/ council tax (may reduce friend’s entitlement to benefits being claimed) In their car Cheap in short term but ongoing cost of road tax and insurance Provides some safety & shelter Can keep more of your belongings Cold Uncomfortable Not sustainable No address for benefits and job applications Woods or Camping Greater feeling of safety than on streets Quiet Shelter from trees Isolated Lack of amenities and access to support No address for benefits or job applications In temporary accommodation such as shelters and hostels Cheap or free Safe/warm Some facilities Support staff Limited availability Barriers to access Temporary Rules and conditions © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017

If you were homeless… Where would you sleep? 9/15/2017 If you were homeless… Where would you sleep? How would you get and cook your meals? How would you keep yourself and your possessions safe? Where would you go to shower or do laundry? This is to encourage pupils to consider the practical aspects of homelessness. Aberdeen Cyrenians provides support and advice on access and accommodation. Through our Street Alternatives project we provide meals, showers and laundry facilities for those sleeping rough or without access to basic facilities. © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017

If you were homeless… Who would you tell? 9/15/2017 If you were homeless… Who would you tell? Where would you go to find support? How would you keep in touch with friends and family? How would you spend your time? © Aberdeen Cyrenians 2017
