ICT and CADCAM in Textiles

Computers are used to Design and Present Designers use computers for: Writing documents and doing display boards, including artwork, text, spreadsheets etc. Colouring images rather than drawing Digital photography and video making. Designing and sampling I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Advantages of using Computers in Design and Manufacture They increase efficiency and accuracy They reduce costs if efficiency is increased Working conditions are often safer using computerised machinery They allow for more flexibility as changes in production can be made more rapidly. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Programmes used by Designers I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Create Digital Logos and Patterns Photoshop and Illustrator are often used to do this, I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Producing Mood Boards I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Drawing Designs – Changing Colourways Computer programmes can be used for drawing and designing products. It is much easier to change designs and colours on a computer than it is by hand. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Virtual Prototypes – 3D Modelling Computer software can model your final design in 3D. It creates a virtual prototype to help you see if your design is working. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

CLICK on the black box to see the video. Virtual Catwalks Computer software can even use 3D animation technology to make virtual catwalks so that you can show your client your collection. CLICK on the black box to see the video. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Designing and Sampling using Computers Computers can be used to pass information quickly to machinery to make samples. Woven or knitted fabrics can easily be designed onscreen. Embroidery motifs can be designed onscreen and then stitched. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Pattern Design and Grading Pattern design, grading (making different sizes of pattern) and pattern making can be computer aided. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Pattern Designing and Lay Plans Computers can be used to Grade patterns Make lay plans I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Pattern Lay Plans Pattern lay plans are worked out using a computer plan. The lay plan ensures that the pattern pieces are laid out close together, in the most efficient way to reduce fabric wastage. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

CAM – Computer Aided Manufacture By using CAM: Time can be saved and modifications made more easily Production can be closely monitored for quality and safety Costs reduced as a result of efficiency. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Digital Printing Computers can be used to Do digital print designs for fabric and samples I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Cutting Out Big industrial machines cut out pattern pieces cutting through lots of layers at once. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Computerised Knitting Computers can be used to Make seamless knitted garments I am just seeing what happens if I add notes. Individual seamless knitted garments can be made from instructions sent by the computer to the knitting machine. Knitted fabric designs can be quickly altered on the computer linked to the machine.

Computerised Weaving Weaving loom designs can be quickly altered on the computer that is linked to the loom. I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Fabric Spreading Machine Automatic spreading of fabric and cutting out produces quick and accurate results. Vertical knives can be used to do this, or (much more these days) lasers. Advantages: More accurate Much faster I am just seeing what happens if I add notes. 19 1919

Computerised Pockets and Buttonholes I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

In Industry Computers also Assist with: Monitoring of quality Stock control Production scheduling I am just seeing what happens if I add notes.

Key facts to remember The exam: Modern materials Key words: CAD CAM Designing Sampling Pattern making Pattern lay plan Digital printing Stock control Key facts to remember CAD and CAM usually go together Be clear about the benefits of using CAM The exam: You must be understand the benefits of using computers in manufacturing. Appreciate the link between CAD and CAM
