Scheme Of Redemption
Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet
Main concepts of our study "Scheme of Redemption" The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin
Main concepts of our study Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis 12-50 – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt Exodus 13-18 – Two Month Journey to Sinai Exodus 19-Numbers 10 – One Year at Sinai Number 11-14 – Unbelief Number 15-Deut 34 – 40 Years of Wandering Joshua – Canaan Conquered and Divided Judges 1-1 Samuel 9 – Period of the Judges
Recap Had an introduction to Judges Discussed how 2nd generation, under Joshua’s leadership, had tremendous success Israel correctly “inquired of the Lord” after Joshua died, and the Lord appointed Caleb to lead Israel Eventually, the 3rd generation of Israel came into leadership and did not “know the Lord They did not clear out Canaan as God had commanded, thereby breaking the covenant God became angry and gave them over to Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia
Othniel Younger brother of Caleb After Israel was in captivity to Cushan- rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, they cried out to the Lord and He raised up Othniel Otheniel led Israel into war against Mesopotamia and defeated them, delivering Israel Israel had 40 years of peace Othniel died and Israel “again did evil in the sight of the Lord” (Judges 3:12) – idol worship God delivered them into hands of Moab for 18 years
Ehud Israel cried out to the Lord after 18 years of servitude to Moab, and God raises up Ehud Benjamite and a left-handed man Moabite king Eglon was “a very fat man” (3:17) Ehud made a two edged sword, a cubit long, and strapped it to the inside of his right thigh Ehud told the king that he had a secret message for the king, and went with the king to his “cool roof chamber”
Ehud While in the chamber with the king, Ehud pulls out this sword and stabbed the king with it, so far that it buried into the fat of his belly (handle and all) Ehud left the sword in Eglon’s body, locked the doors of the vestibule, and escaped Eglon’s servants came and found the door locked, and decided that the king must be relieving himself After a long period of time, they unlocked the door and found Eglon dead Ehud lead Israel in an attack against Moab Israel has peace for 80 years
Eglon’s “cool room” & Ehud’s escape Vestibule Ehud locked this door “Restroom” “Toilet”
Deborah and Barak After Ehud died, Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan Israel was oppressed for 20 years, Israel cried out to the Lord and He raised up the prophetess Deborah Israel would come to her for judgement
Deborah and Barak Deborah received word from the Lord, and contacted Barak to carry it out Barak refuses to go unless Deborah goes with him. Deborah agrees to go, but says “I will surely go with you; nevertheless, the honor shall not be yours on the journey that you are about to take, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hands of a woman.” Judges 5 – Deborah gets a song about her and how she delivered Israel Israel has peace for 40 years
Gideon Israel did evil again, and God delivered them into hands of Midian for seven years Midian heavily outnumbered Israel, as did their livestock. When Israel would grow gardens, Midian would come to camp against them and their livestock would destroy all Israel had planted Israel was brought low and cried out to God, and God raised up Gideon
Gideon Angel of the Lord visits Gideon and informs Gideon that he will deliver Israel Gideon prepares a sacrifice for the angel of the Lord who accepts it 6:27 – Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the Lord had spoken to him; and because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city to do it by day, he did it by night.
Gideon The Spirit of the Lord comes upon Gideon and he moves to battle, but has doubts He asks for two signs (fleece covered in dew and ground dry first, then vice versa) Gideon starts out with 32,000 people, but God says it’s too many. After a series of paring out the people, Gideon was left with 300 men
Gideon Gideon armed the men with trumpets and empty pitchers. The men blew their trumpets and smashed their pitchers together all at once, then took up swords and torches in their hand while yelling for the Lord and Gideon The enemy was terrified and began killing one another Israel has 40 years of peace His son, Abimelech, then serves as a quasi- judge
Issachar & Jair Jud. 10:1-2 - Now after Abimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, arose to save Israel; and he lived in Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. He judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died and was buried in Shamir. Jud. 10:3-5 - After him, Jair the Gileadite arose and judged Israel twenty-two years. He had thirty sons who rode on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty cities in the land of Gilead that are called Havvoth- jair to this day. And Jair died and was buried in Kamon. After Jair died, Israel again served foreign gods and God gave them over to Philistines and Ammon
“He could bear their misery no longer” Judges 10:10-16 – Then the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord, saying, “We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and served the Baals.” The Lord said to the sons of Israel, “Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians, the Amorites, the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines? Also when the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hands. Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods; therefore I will no longer deliver you. Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress.” The sons of Israel said to the Lord, “We have sinned, do to us whatever seems good to You; only please deliver us this day.” So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord; and He could bear the misery of Israel no longer.
Jephthah The son of Gilead, but the son of a harlot, and was therefore run out of his family home Fled from his brothers and As Israel fought against Ammon, the elders of Gilead sought out Jephthah and asked him to be their chief. Jephthah at first pushes back, because they had run him out. But they express their desire for his leadership and he agrees to lead them.
Jephthah Note that God did not appoint Jephthah as a judge, but was appointed by the elders of Gilead However, the Lord was called upon and God honored it: vs. 10-11 – “The Lord is witness between us; surely we will do as you have said.” Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and chief over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord at Mizpah. Matthew 18:19-20 - Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.
Jephthah’s foolishness Judges 11:29-33 - Now the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, so that he passed through Gilead and Manasseh; then he passed through Mizpah of Gilead, and from Mizpah of Gilead he went on to the sons of Ammon. Jephthah made a vow to the Lord and said, “If You will indeed give the sons of Ammon into my hand, then it shall be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me when I return in peace from the sons of Ammon, it shall be the Lord’s, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering.” So Jephthah crossed over to the sons of Ammon to fight against them; and the Lord gave them into his hand. He struck them with a very great slaughter from Aroer to the entrance of Minnith, twenty cities, and as far as Abel-keramim. So the sons of Ammon were subdued before the sons of Israel.
Jephthah’s foolishness Judges 11:34-40 - When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, behold, his daughter was coming out to meet him with tambourines and with dancing. Now she was his one and only child; besides her he had no son or daughter. When he saw her, he tore his clothes and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are among those who trouble me; for I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot take it back.” So she said to him, “My father, you have given your word to the Lord; do to me as you have said, since the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the sons of Ammon.” She said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me; let me alone two months, that I may go to the mountains and weep because of my virginity, I and my companions.” Then he said, “Go.” So he sent her away for two months; and she left with her companions, and wept on the mountains because of her virginity. At the end of two months she returned to her father, who did to her according to the vow which he had made; and she had no relations with a man. Thus it became a custom in Israel, that the daughters of Israel went yearly to commemorate the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in the year.
Jephthah, Izban, Elon, and Abdon Judges 12:7-15 Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead. Now Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel after him. He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage outside the family, and he brought in thirty daughters from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years. Then Ibzan died and was buried in Bethlehem. Now Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel after him; and he judged Israel ten years. Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun. Now Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel after him. He had forty sons and thirty grandsons who rode on seventy donkeys; and he judged Israel eight years. Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
Samson Judges 13:1 – Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, so that the Lord gave them into the hands of the Philistines forty years The angel of the Lord appeared to Samson’s parents and informed them of Samson’s birth Judges 13:24-25 - Then the woman gave birth to a son and named him Samson; and the child grew up and the Lord blessed him. And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him in Mahaneh-dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol.
Samson Samson wanted to marry a woman from the Philistines, but his parents argued with him about it. Samson says “Get her for me, for she looks good to me.” Judges 14:4 - However, his father and mother did not know that it was of the Lord, for He was seeking an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel. Samson ultimately killed many Philistines because of his being married to one Samson was known for his strength, which was given to him by the Lord so long as he maintained his Nazarite viow (Num. 6:13-20) of never cutting his hair (which was part of the command from the Lord made to Samson's mother)
Samson Samson had an anger issue, which the Lord used as judgment upon the Philistines. Anytime they crossed Samson, the "spirit of the Lord" would come upon him and he would go on a killing spree Through trickery, the Philistines ultimately learned that Samson would lose his strength if his hair was cut and it happened. The Philistines then tortured Samson and made sport of him in public However, Samson asked God for to restore his strength to avenge himself. God provided his strength back which Samson used to collapse a facility with many Philistines inside it. In this event, Samson killed more Philistines than he had in his whole life (thousands) Samson judged Israel for 20 years
Lawlessness Judges 17-21 outline a tragic period of lawlessness and idolatry that leads to civil war against the tribe of Benjamin, in which Benjamin was decimated Judges 21, Israel mourns the tragedy of Benjamin and tries to restore what is left of Benjamin 21:25 ends Judges with “In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
Samuel Samuel the last judge prior to the period of the kings His mother Hannah had agreed to dedicate Samuel to the Lord if God would but bless her with a son. God does so, and after Samuel is weaned, Hannah put him into the "house of the Lord in Shiloah 1 Samuel 3:1 - Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those days, visions were infrequent Here, God speaks to Samuel in the middle of the night and informs Samuel of the impending judgement against the priest, Eli, and his evil sons
Samuel 1 Samuel 4 - The Philistines and Israel are in a battle, Israel is defeated, and the ark of the covenant is taken by the Philistines Eli's two sons are killed. When Eli hears that the ark was taken, he falls backwards off his chair and his neck was broken, as he was "old (98 yrs old)and heavy" (1 Sam 4:18). Thus God's judgement upon the house of Eli is executed 1 Samuel 5-7 - God sends plagues upon the Philistines for taking the ark, and they return it to Israel. Samuel instructs Israel to return to the Lord, and they begin to turn. God provides protection of Israel from an attempt of the Philistines to ambush Israel 1 Sam 7:15-17 - Now Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. He used to go annually on circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places. Then his return was to Ramah, for his house was there, and there he judged Israel; and he built there an altar to the Lord.
Samuel Samuel 8:4-9 - Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah; and they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. The Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them. Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day—in that they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. Now then, listen to their voice; however, you shall solemnly warn them and tell them of the procedure of the king who will reign over them.”
Samuel Samuel warns Israel of what will happen if a king reigns over them, but the people press for a king and the Lord again tells Samuel to do it 1 Samuel 9 & 10 - Samuel meets Saul and annoints Saul king over Israel
Period of the kings begins From here, the period of the kings begin, and that’s where we’ll pick up at some point in the future
