The Flipped Classroom Today I am going to be talking about the flipped classroom, , some potential obstacles, tips to successfully implement it in a classroom, and a few options of how to use it. Photo source: http://learnerdiversitysummer2010.wikispaces.com/Gender+and+Educational+Equity

What is it? Traditional Class Flipped Classroom Lectures are given in class Homework is assigned to practice new skill Flipped Classroom Lectures are assigned for homework Students may pause, rewind, and view as many times as they need Students come to class with prior knowledge Students are able to practice new skills with the aid of their teacher So, in a traditional class lectures, and new concepts are given in class, and then students are sent home to practice the new skill by themselves. In a flipped classroom lectures recorded and assigned for homework, and students may watch them as much as they need to understand the concept, and then they come to class ready to actively learn with the aid of the teacher.

Some Potential Obstacles to Overcome: Access Students not watching the video before coming to class Extra Preparation time Adapting to a new way of doing things Access, students not watching the videos, extra prep and planning, adapting to a new way of doing things. The benefits Research has shown an increase in grades in a classes that effectively flip. http://diaryofagamergirl.blogspot.com/

Leaves no student behind Adequate time to address the needs of the struggling and advanced students!!! Some struggling students too embarrassed to ask for help…..there is also more class time for the teacher to help them in class….advanced students can move on to advanced concepts Clark, K. R. (2015). The Effects of the Flipped Model of Instruction on Student Engagement and Performance in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom. Journal Of Educators Online, 12(1), 91-115. More Active Learning Time in Class Experiments Projects Collaboration Better Class Discussions More Time to Teach Advanced Concepts Now the fun part when you get to act as guide on the side. We all like to see when our students have an aha moment, and start to understand the material. In a flipped classroom you have the opportunity to push your students to think more deeply regarding the content of the class. Clark, K. R. (2015). The Effects of the Flipped Model of Instruction on Student Engagement and Performance in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom. Journal Of Educators Online, 12(1), 91-115.

Tips For Success Start Small and learn from mistakes One Class One Unit One Subject Don’t try to flip all your classes in all subjects at one time. Flip one class, and then evaluate what when wrong, what went well, and learn how to improve, and then move on to a unit, and then an entire subject, 5 things I wish I knew when I flipped my classroom Retrieved From goedonline4teachers

Fail to Plan….Plan to Fail! It will require extra planning time. To be successful it is essential to plan extra class time well. Videos and active learning in class must be carefully aligned. For a class to benefit it must be planned well. Have extra work ready for advanced students. Make sure work aligns with the videos. Strayer, J. (2012). How learning in an inverted classroom influences cooperation, innovation and task orientation. Learning Environments Research, 15(2), 171-193. doi:10.1007/s10984-012-9108-4 http://www.livingmyimperfectlife.com/

Know Your Audience Be engaging Keep Kids safe online

Most teachers found that shorter videos were more beneficial… Most teachers found that shorter videos were more beneficial….and more likely to be watched by students! Especially if all classes are flipped! Gaughan, J. E. (2014). The Flipped Classroom in World History. History Teacher, 47(2), 221-244.

Long Division All classes can benefit. Math is def. a no brainer, and I am going to focus on a class trying to learn long division.

What works for your class? YouTube.edu Fun Brain Fact Monster Watch Know Learn Khan Academy O.K Lets explore 3 possible ways to flip your class. The first way was one I learned from the head of the Math department of a local hs. He uses videos that have been made by others… some possible websites to use are….He lets the students know what they will need to learn and then give a video resource list where they can decide which videos will get them where they need to be. This put them in control of their learning. Jeremy Winchell, personal communication, 2016.
