20 Years Serving the RIPE NCC Membership Began operations in April 1992 100 members in 1994 to over 8,000 in 2012 Initially set up as: Network Coordination Centre for RIPE The first Regional Internet Registry (RIR) Still performing these functions, and many others, today… 2

Strong Registry Allocation of Internet number resources (IPv4, IPv6, ASNs) Accurate registration of Internet number resource data in the service region Maintain the RIPE Database Extremely important functions But, more than just a registry… 3

Coordination Activities K-root ENUM Supporting the RIPE PDP Training Courses RIPE Meetings Regional support Defending the bottom-up, self-regulation model with governments, regulators, law enforcement 4

Representing the Members’ Interests Defending the bottom-up, self-regulation model with governments, regulators, law enforcement WSIS (2003-2005) IGF (2006-present) OECD (2007-present) WCIT (2012) Coordinate with other industry bodies RIRs, ICANN, IANA, IETF, IAB, ISOC, etc. 5

What Are the Important Issues Today? Many of the same issues there have always been: Strong registry Accurate data Legacy address space Coordinating technical community for the good of the Internet 6

What Are the Important Issues Today? But we live in a changing world… IPv4 run-out and IPv6 adoption Increased interest in the Internet Certification Providing statistical information about the Internet that is operationally useful for our members 7

How Are We Meeting These Challenges? Increased audit activity Establishing contractual relationships Increased regional support Outreach (Roundtable Meetings for governments and LEAs) 8

How Are We Meeting These Challenges? Increased monitoring and reporting on remaining pool of IPv4 address space Closely aligning Activity Plan and Budget, setting up Charging Scheme Task Force IPv6 stuff ad nauseum 9

How Are We Meeting These Challenges? Developing RIPE NCC information services: RIPEstat – Providing information on specific Internet number resources RIPE Atlas – Measuring the state of the Internet and allowing user-defined measurements RIPE Labs – Presenting innovative Internet tools and ideas LIR Portal – Letting you manage your registry data and make queries and updates 10
