LIPIDS

What are some examples of Lipids? (This is just funny because of lipids!)

How do animals stay warm in chilly waters? What are some examples of Lipids? How do animals stay warm in chilly waters? Blubber - a thin layer of adipose (fat) tissue. Helps to insulate an animal’s body. Blubber is fat tissue made up of lipids.

What else is made of lipids? BUTTER WAX OIL What else is made of lipids? Cell Membrane Hormones

Lipid Basics A Fatty Acid! A Triglyceride Lipids are FATS!!!! Made of C,H, & O. They are Hydrophobic/Nonpolar What is the monomer for lipids? A Fatty Acid! or A Triglyceride (Glycerol & 3 Fatty Acids)

What functional groups do you see? Carboxyl group Methyl group

Where are lipids made in the cell? The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER)! This is the tunnel like section around the nucleus that doesn’t have any bumps

There are 3 types of Lipids Triglycerides/Fats – Used for LONG term energy storage, insulation/protection

There are 3 types of Lipids 2) Phospholipids – Used in cell membranes What is the purpose of the cell membrane? Regulating what comes in/out of the cell (it is semipermeable)

There are 3 types of Lipids 3) Steroids – Used for fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E and K) and hormones What are hormones used for? Cell Signaling (cell texting – long distances)

Fatty acids can either be saturated or unsaturated Types of Fatty Acids Fatty acids can either be saturated or unsaturated Unsaturated fatty acids have a double bond which causes a kink in the chain. This makes them liquid at room temp and easier to break up in the body which is why they are better for you.

Phospholipid Types of Fatty Acids Phospholipids are the main component of the cell membrane. They are made up of a phosphate group, a glycerol, a saturated fatty acid and an unsaturated fatty acid. Phospholipid

Dehydration synthesis How are lipids assembled? Dehydration synthesis How are lipids pulled apart? Hydrolysis

Build these 2 Lipids! A Phospholipid A Triglyceride
