MICE Hall Summer Workplan Colin Whyte

Overview Liquid H2 installation Magnet recommissioning Operation with neon Mechanical Safety approval Operation with Hydrogen Monitoring/manpower Magnet recommissioning US team visit Run-up to data-taking Tracker DAQ Controls – Alarm Handler

Liquid Neon testing It works – with Neon. Experts are learning their system Gas system from bottle to roof proved. Detail changes to control sequences required External monitoring is required. Cooling performance for 24/27K operation is good. H2 system is leak tight Leaks to H2 safety volume are important Cryo pumping can hide leaks when absorber is cold Leak found on Neon vent line – will not he used in H2 system.

Package Managers Meeting 001 13th January 2014 Current Status Modifications to Turret:- completed Bypass pipe plus thermal link to radiation shield. Thermal links between radiation shield and support rods. Thermal link to H2 return pipe removed. Remove pre-cool pipes and cap. Re-position pressure gauge pipe and cap end. No changes to heaters Improve/re-establish instrumentation heat sinking. Correct connector pins Repair broken wire Tighten connector nuts – lock to prevent rotation.

Turret internal bypass

Turret modifications.

H2 Mechanical Current status FC off-line Installing new turret. New Y piece part procured, in fabrication. Leak checking to follow. Next steps FC back on line. Re-instate ‘old’ quench line or new line. Neon testing 1st week July with new software.

H2 mechanical Slightly longer term New vacuum/quench line fabrication. Internal to hall New 150mm ID line Transition to 2 x 100mm lines. External to hall Pipework to H2 shed Lift plates

Package Managers Meeting 001 Quench/vacuum piping Package Managers Meeting 001 13th January 2014

Quench/vacuum piping

Bellows – plus lockout

H2 vacuum/quench lines

Liquid Hydrogen – vent valve Package Managers Meeting 001 13th January 2014 Liquid Hydrogen – vent valve 2 off in parallel in H2 ‘shed’ on MICE hall roof. Aluminium ‘lift plate’ Trapped o-ring No metal to metal contact Tufnol retainer/guide rods Requires earth strap. Maintains 100mm clear diameter. To be tested and approved by ISIS oversight for re-seat (essential to avoid air ingress post quench leading to possible explosion risk)

Safety Approval All mechanical work complete Neon test with new hardware and software complete Safety tour by ISIS Feedback and possible remediation Final approval. Then liquid H2 running.

LH2 monitoring New monitoring system required to allow experts access to monitoring information from home. Shifters provide majority of cover – experts ‘on-call’ Linux ‘box’ with 2 network cards to ‘isolate’ Linux box runs gateway allowing download of PVs for export to EPICS but no command access. PVs archived and accessible as other MICE systems – also used in alarm handler. PLC further isolated by FINS settings restricting commands to single non-networked PC in locked H2 control room. ISIS says yes.

Liquid H2 Plan

Trackers All cryos curently warm (320K) 2 pumpsets, 1 each upstream and downstream trackers, long KF40 lines. Pump-purge to remove water – theory is plastic part of connector has absorbed water – prolonged period of pumping required to remove. Initially used dry turbo rigs, but leaks too large, require ‘decent’ scroll pumps- in procurement. Cooldown and recalibration required – A Bross to support.

SS magnets Have not been energised since Feb 2017 DL to test power supplies this week. Re-commissioning of QPS system Test magnets to operating current. Possible re-test of cold absorber FC quench with SSU to fully validate absorber. A Bross, S Feher FNAL August 4th to 18th. DL remote support

Expert led run-up Plan pre-run shakedown Early September Ed Overton replacement(s) DAQ/Tracker David Adey ?? No beam – fake triggers.
