Status of LEB J. Gerl GSI – Darmstadt, Germany NUSTAR Week 2011 IFIN-HH, Bucharest, October 17-21, 2011 NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

Super-FRS Buildings (as originally presented for ZBau) Roadmap CC LP1 (basic technical considerations)  LP2 (preliminary design, cost estimate)  → Modularized Start Version (MSV) LP3 (blueprint planning, detailed costs), → ongoing #6b (LEC) #18 (Target building) #103 (Super-FRS tunnel) #6a (service building) #6 (HEC) direct beam line to NESR #104 (SIS connection) CR, NESR #6c pbar production NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

Super-FRS Buildings (modularized start version) Rearranged Service building Ext. LEB focus (initial HISPEC/DESPEC) #103 (Super-FRS tunnel) #18 (LP3 started) #6 (HEC) FHF1 (stopping cell) No NESR CR #6c pbar production #104 (SIS connection) NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

MATS/LASPEC New Experimental Area (MSV) Stopped beams will be extracted and transported vertically to the MATS/LASPEC experimental area in the building above the tunnel/R3B cave Inefficient, permanent re-configuration 1 floor only: reduced set-up Additional costs not covered Exp. Station 2 (final focus HEB, Stopping Cell) NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

HISPEC/DESPEC New Experimental Area (MSV) Exp. Station 1 (final focus LEB) Size:  FRS/S4 Insufficient flight path for LYCCA No space for spectrometer/buncher Limited neutron det. E resolution NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

How to proceed? LEB Ring Sub-Projects 1. Parallel planning to get costs and not to loose time Agreed by FAIR, requires 68 k€ from collaborators 2. Organize extra funds to ask for building permit and start construction Extra funds (estim. 1.5 M€) from external sources and/or from experiments to be raised within 1.5 years Ring Sub-Projects 1. Prepare a realization plan Continue R&D for TDRs, be ready if new funds come in 2. Pursue an attractive experiment programme at the ESR To keep the collaboration together 3. Realize essential parts of the instrumentation To be employed in other NUSTAR sub-projects NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG

Where are we? Funding for parallel planning will be complete by end of October First meeting with architects took place in early October Updated total cost for LEB cave from architecs: 5.219 M€ in 2011 prices Net costs by deducting extra MSV costs for LEB experiments and potential savings to be evaluated by the end of the year Time plan for realization and required money flow expected by end of November Strategy for the realization to be agreed on by first quarter 2012 Approaching FAIR Council in second quarter 2012 NUSTAR Week 2011 - JG
