The Water Cycle Standard 4, Objective 1 Handout 1 (4-1) The Water Cycle Standard 4, Objective 1

The origin of Earth’s water supply What question has puzzled mankind for centuries? The origin of Earth’s water supply

Up to five times as much water falls to Earth as the rivers carry off. Once people were able to measure the amount of water that falls to Earth, what did they discover? Up to five times as much water falls to Earth as the rivers carry off.

Where does all the water go? Once people had learned how much water falls to Earth, what more puzzling question remained? Where does all the water go?

What is essential for humans and all other organisms? Water!

How much of Earth’s surface is covered with water? More than two thirds

Where is Earth’s surface water not found? In the atmosphere

flows through the rock below Earth’s surface 7. Groundwater is water that Groundwater is water that _________. flows through the rock below Earth’s surface

Water occurring as an invisible gas is called _______________. Water Vapor

Where is water vapor found? In the Atmosphere

It is constantly changing from one form to another. What is always happening to Earth water? It is constantly changing from one form to another.

What is the continuous movement of water from the atmosphere  to the land  to the oceans  and back? Water Cycle

By what process does liquid water change into water vapor? Evaporation!

What is the process by which plants and animals release water into the atmosphere? Transpiration!
