True Repentance Based on a sermon by Don McClain

What Is True Repentance? It is a command of God - (Luke13:3,5; Acts 17:30) The hardest command? - (Ezekiel 18:20-32; Matthew5:29,30; Mark 9:43-48) Something God wants us to do - (Romans 2:3-6; 2 Peter 3:9) It is a matter of grace toward men - (Acts 11:18; 2 Tim 2:25,26)

Repent Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary Usage Number: A-1; Part Of Speech: Verb; Strong's Number: <G3340> Original Word: μετανοέω, metanoeō Usage Notes: lit., "to perceive afterwards" (meta, "after," implying "change," noeō, "to perceive;" nous, "the mind, the seat of moral reflection"), in contrast to pronoeō, "to perceive beforehand,“ hence signifies "to change one's mind or purpose," always, in the NT, involving a change for the better, an amendment, . . . .”

What True Repentance is not… A promise to quit sinning - Luke 3:8,9; Ezekiel 18:21-32 Quitting one sin – Psalm 119:104, 128; Ezekiel 18:30 Hiding sin - Psalm 32:3-5; 51:1-5; Numbers 32:23, Proverbs 28:13

What True Repentance is not… Being sorry - Matthew 5:3–5; 19:22; 27:3-5; 2 Corinthians 7:10 Saying, “I have sinned!” – Exodus 9:27; 10:16; Numbers 22:34; I Samuel 15:24, 30; Matthew 27:4

Recognize (acknowledge Sin) Repentance proceeds from faith in God & what God says – Acts 17:23-31; Hebrews 11:6; 2 Corinthians 7:8–9; Romans 2:4; 11:22 We must examine ourselves by God’s word – 2 Corinthians 13:5; Acts 2:14-41; 8:19-24; 2 Timothy 2:24-26; Hebrews 4:12 We Need To Recognize - Our Guilt, Our Need & Our Only Hope – Psalms 51:1-4

5 R’s of Repentance Recognition Remorse

Remorse (Sorry and Grief over sin) Not repentance in and of itself, but is necessary TO repentance – Psalm 51:3-6; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 Remorse in and of itself does not ALWAYS lead to repentance – Matthew 27:3-5 It MUST be godly sorrow - (again as David – Psalm 51:3-6)

5 R’s of Repentance Recognition Remorse Resolve

Resolve (A change of Mind) The resolve to change ones mind & will (the heart of repentance) – Psalm 51:7-12 Luke 15:18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you

Resolve (A Change Of Mind) Be humble, pray, seek, & turn from wicked ways, - (2 Chronicles 7:14) Get yourself a new heart and a new spirit - (Ezekiel 18:31) Transformed by renewing your mind that you may prove … (Romans 12:2)

5 R’s of Repentance Recognition Remorse Resolve Reformation

Reformation (Change of Ways) Luke 15:17-20 Ezekiel 18:27-28 Again, when a wicked man turns away from the wickedness which he committed, and does what is lawful and right, he preserves himself alive. 28 Because he considers and turns away from all the transgressions which he committed, he shall surely live; he shall not die.

5 R’s of Repentance Recognition Remorse Resolve Reformation Restitution

Who Needs to repent? Something Every Sinner Must Do – Luke 13:3,5; Acts 2:38; 8:22; 17:30 Something God wants every sinner to do – Romans 2:3-6; 2 Peter 3:9
