Summary of work Carl N. Karcher started Carl’s Jr. restaurant in 1956. Carl’s Jr. was inspired by the McDonalds brother’s revolutionary “Speedee” service. Colonel Sanders was a renaissance man who founded Kentucky Fried Chicken. Advances in the automobile industry changed the advertisement aspect of fast food companies. Ray Kroc and Walt Disney had very similar lives. The fast food industry hired people from all walks of life.

Continued Dave Feamster was a NHL player who purchased The Little Caesars franchise. Ray Kroc was an excellent business man. J.R. Simplot became a master at growing and selling potatoes and other produce. Flavor comes from our sense of smell. Hank was a rancher who competed with industrial meat packing plants. The chicken nugget allowed chicken to be eaten quickly and on the go.

Continued There are numerous controversies and problems behind the scenes of meat packing industries. Immigrants make up a huge part of the workforce in meat packing plants. Slaughter houses have countless hazards that threaten the safety of workers. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has tried to fix the conditions of meat packing plants by regulating injury logs.

Continued E. Coli forms in the meat because workers are not careful in cleaning the animal, and its waste contaminates the meat. This called for a huge recall in beef. Those unfortunate enough to consume of the tainted meat faced food poisoning and in some cases death. Other parts of the world saw how successful American fast food chains were and wanted to adopt these practices. Eventually, the first McDonalds opened in East Germany.

Author’s Purpose Eric Schlosser wrote this book to increase the awareness of the problems in food production and preparation in America. The common practice of consuming fast food may change if people are educated about what they eat.

Author’s Argument Schlosser believes that fast food is in our nature and everyday lives. He argues that the industries that provide us with out meat should be more careful in the cleanliness and freshness of the meat we consume.
