All about East Timor East Timor is located in the eastern part of Timor, an island in the Indonesian archipelago that lies between the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.

Etymology “Timor” derives from timur, the word for ‘east’ in Indonesian and Malay, which became Timor in Portuguese and entered English as Portuguese Timor.

History Timor was colonized by the portuguese in 1520. The dutch, who claimed many of the surrounding islands, took control of the western portion of the island in 1613.

Culture LITERATURE Easily the most famous East Timorese is Xanana Gusmao. The leader of the Timorese resistance organization Fretilin, and former Prime Minister of independent East Timor.

RELIGION East Timor has been nominally Catholic, since early in the Portuguese colonial period. The catholic faith became a central part of East Timorese culture during the Indonesian occupation between 1975 and 1999.

Language East Timor’s two official languages are Portuguese and Teturn. Teturn belongs to the Austronesian family of languages spoken throughout Southeast Asia.

Musical instruments SARON -is a musical instrument of indonesia, which is used in the gamelan.

GAMBANG -is a xylophone-like instrument used among peoples of Indonesia and the southern Philippines in gamelan and kulintang.

SLENTHEM -is a low-pitched instrument, with a softer sound than the saron demung.

GONG AGENG -means large gong, it is the largest of the bronze gongs in the Javanese and Balinese gamelan orchestra and the only large gong that is called gong in the Javanese.

BONANG -is a musical instrument in the Javanese gamelan. It is a collection of small gongs placed horizontally onto strings in a wooden frame, either one or two rows wide.
