1 Peter 3:8-12

8 Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For, “Whoever would love life     and see good days must keep their tongue from evil     and their lips from deceitful speech.

11 They must turn from evil and do good;     they must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous     and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Prov 12:18 Rash words pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Prov 13:3 Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives; those who open wide their lips come to ruin. Prov 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.

Eph 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Eph 5:4 Entirely out of place is obscene, silly, and vulgar talk; but instead, let there be thanksgiving.

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt Col 3:8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt

WORDS MAKE US UNCLEAN Matt 12:36-37 I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matt 15:10-11 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, “Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.”

WORDS MAKE US UNCLEAN James 1:26 If any think they are religious, and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is placed among our members as a world of iniquity; it stains the whole body

WORDS SHOW US TO BE UNCLEAN Matt 12:35-37 For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person brings good things out of a good treasure, and the evil person brings evil things out of an evil treasure. I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

WORDS SHOW US TO BE UNCLEAN Matt 15:10-11, 17-18 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, “Listen and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.” … Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach, and goes out into the sewer? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this is what defiles.

WORDS SHOW US TO BE UNCLEAN James 3:1-2,8 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.  We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check… but no one can tame the tongue - a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

WORDS SHOW US TO BE UNCLEAN James 3:9-12 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.  Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. Can both fresh water and bitter water flow from the same spring?  Can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

WORDS MAKE US CLEAN Isaiah 6:1-8 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;     the whole earth is full of his glory.”

WORDS MAKE US CLEAN Isaiah 6:1-8 4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

WORDS MAKE US CLEAN Isaiah 6:1-8 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
