Segerstrom High School ROAR Week – Day 2 Ownership in the Classroom Seminar Period Wednesday, February 15, 2017 You may want students to take notes as you go through the slides. Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

In class, what does it mean to…. Actively participate and commit to your learning! In class, what does it mean to…. Actively participate Commit to your learning Discuss this with students. Maybe jot down some of the ideas on the board. Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

Ownership NOUN The state or fact of being an owner You can own more than things There is more to being an “owner” than just owning material things (car, house, clothes, phone, etc). For instance…. In the classroom, when a student takes responsibility for not completing their work and does not try to blame others or outside forces, they are being the owner of their actions. Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

According to Urban Dictionary... Own it! According to Urban Dictionary... Taking pride in what you got Take responsibility to what you've done. Be accountable for your actions. For “according to you”, have students share what the term “own it” means to them, particularly in the classroom. According to you….. (or how can you “own it” in the classroom?) Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

From the film: Rocky Balboa Questions to ask of students after viewing clip -How does the clip relate to the value of ownership? -How can the ideas in the clip be transferred to the classroom? From the film: Rocky Balboa

“Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands.” ― Anne Frank How is this quote related to ownership? Have students rewrite the quote to apply to the classroom (Example: Teachers can only give good advice or put students on the right paths, but the final forming of a student’s academic character lies in their own hands) Resiliency Ownership Achievement

Ownership consists of... Pride Honesty Integrity and…. Resiliency Ownership in the CLASSROOM consists of,,, -Pride in turning work in on time and complete -Honesty about mistake that are made, like copying from a friend -Integrity in resisting the urge to copy and paste answer instead of doing your own thinking and work Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

Being reliable, dependable, and accountable Responsibility You may need to define reliable (able to be trusted), dependable (responsible), and accountable (culpable; responsible to/for) to students. Being reliable, dependable, and accountable

When you take ownership, you are taking responsibility for…. Your choices Choosing not to do your work to the best of your ability (or at all) is not something that anyone but you can control. You need to own the grade you receive because of it. Your actions If you do something that you know you should not (like cheating), you need to be willing to admit your wrongdoing and deal with the consequences. Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect

Resiliency Ownership Respect “Freeing yourself was one thing; claiming ownership of that freed self was another.” -Toni Morrison “Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.” ― Jean-Paul Sartre “There is an expiry date on blaming your parents for steering you in the wrong direction; the moment you are old enough to take the wheel, responsibility lies with you.” ― J.K. Rowling Discuss how each quote is related to the concept of ownership Resiliency Ownership Achievement Respect
