Role of households and consumers Mr. Makgatho Role of households and consumers You will be able to answer all this question after reading your notes. What is an household? Can household be consumers ?how Can household also be producers ?how WHAT IS THE DEFFERENCE BETWEEN BEING EFFICIENT AND BEING EFFECTIVE what is recycling? what are the befits of recycling what can be recycled

WHAT IS AN HOUSEHOLD? Household Mr MAKGATHO WHAT IS AN HOUSEHOLD? Household Is a group of people who purchase and use goods and services and who live in the residence. Are the people that make up the families and groups that occupy homes throughout the country.

ROLE OF HOUSEHOLD AS CONSUMERS MR . MAKGATHO ROLE OF HOUSEHOLD AS CONSUMERS They are consumers. People buy goods and services to satisfy their needs and wants They supply labour. By working, people earn money to buy goods and services. They offer entrepreneurial ability. A business cannot be successful if there were no people to support it, so ordinary people are important in the economic cycle.

ROLE OF HOUSEHOLD AS PRODUCERS MR. MAKGATHO ROLE OF HOUSEHOLD AS PRODUCERS Households supply the labour force that works in the various industries and businesses. Labour is one of the key resources in the production process. Households also produce goods and services for their own consumption, e.g. growing own food, building own shelters, collecting firewood.

USING GOODS AND SERVICES EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY MR. MAKGATHO USING GOODS AND SERVICES EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY Efficiently - means getting the best results from what is available with the least possible waste in time and materials.   Effectively – means choosing the best option to get what you need at the best price at the right time.

Make sure taps are turned off when we are not using water. MR. MAKGATHO Sustainable use of scarce resources - Water Tips to exercise responsibility to use water effectively and efficiently Make sure taps are turned off when we are not using water. Shower, rather than bath, uses less water. Fix leaking taps and hosepipes. Install rainwater tanks to catch rainwater off our roofs. Report broken main pipes to the local municipality, for speedy repairs. Take care of water sources like rivers and dams and make sure they do not become polluted.

WHAT IS RECYCLING? Recycling MR. MAKGATHO WHAT IS RECYCLING? Recycling is about processing used materials (waste) into new products. it reduces the loss of useful materials and reduces demand for fresh raw materials.

MR. MAKGATHO Benefits of recycling Recycling reduce the use of energy in the manufacturing process. It reduces air pollution (from burning) and water pollution (from dumping) by cutting down on the need for normal waste disposal. Recycling contribute to efficient and effective use of resources. Materials to be recycled are either taken to a collection centre or picked up from our homes – then reducing waste in residential areas. It promotes small businesses and creates opportunities for ‘green jobs’ – for people collecting recyclable materials.

Type of products or materials that can be recycled MR. MAKGATHO Type of products or materials that can be recycled Paper Plastic with recycling symbol Aluminium cans Glass Scrap metal Making compost Textiles Examples of products made of recycled materials
