A network is two or more devices that are connected together Introduction What is a Network? A network is two or more devices that are connected together A device could be a desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone and many others
Why would people want to make a network? Advantages Why would people want to make a network? 1 Share resources such as printers and other peripherals 2 Share an Internet connection 3 Allows users to hot-desk 4 Allows security, backups and updates to be centrally managed 5 Site software licenses can often be cheaper than invidious licenses
What are the drawbacks you need to be aware of? Disadvantages What are the drawbacks you need to be aware of? 1 Greater risk of malware spreading 2 Initial set up costs can be expensive 3 Employ a person or team of people to manage it 4 If the server breaks the whole network could come down

Types of Network The geographical distance often determines what type of network is used Local Area Network Wide Area Network There are also other types of network such as a PAN and VPN, but they are beyond the scope of this lesson
