My Ready Steady Active Journey Rashida Salloo

What is Ready Steady Active? Sport, health and physical activity initiative Aim to provide opportunities for everyone to participate regardless of background, ability, age, wealth, religion or skill level. Main focus on BME - South Asian women and girls North Kirklees Running for over 4 years… Use Sport as a social tool to make an impact.

Why are others like me not playing sport? Growing up… Ooh it bounces too! I want to play sport! Why can’t I play sport? Ga ga…ball! Why are others like me not playing sport?

Growing up… Started playing tennis for Batley Tennis Club. Why are there no others like me playing tennis? Something needs to be done! Started playing tennis for Batley Tennis Club. Played for John Charles Tennis Centre. Lack of BME women playing tennis in the local areas

Ready Steady Active…false start Aged 18 attended my first sports session outside school. Thought I could deliver sessions to others! Booked a sports hall, bought some balls & promoted session through posters in local shops. Ran a session and then another and then… Was told to stop!

Ready Steady Active…clean start Started over 4 years ago with just one multi-sport session a week based in a community venue. Initially difficult to engage people…had sessions where no one turned up! It wasn’t just about playing sport – changing mind-set. Building relationships with the community especially the parents – not just what happens inside the session. Understanding and really caring about the participants.

Ready Steady Active now…

Rounders & Football Leagues 2017 Training sessions offered and teams formed. 4 football & 4 rounders teams competed in leagues. Nearly 100 women & girls competed. Teams went on to organise their own training sessions. Mums Team Volunteers supported the teams. Rounders activators trained up. Batgirls were chosen to be Team Aresson and provided with equipment and kits. Huge demand to continue over winter. “Rounders is the best thing that’s happened to be for a long time” – Mum of three.
