What is a Rights Respecting School? A rights respecting school puts the UNCRC at the heart of their culture and ethos to improve well-being and develop every child's talents and abilities to their full potential.

Gorseinon Primary – A Right’s Respecting School

What is a Rights Respecting School? A Rights Respecting school is one where all parts of the school community know about, understand and value the UNCRC. Young People have a genuine democratic voice and actively participate in school decision-making.

It is a school where . . . Young people are encouraged to become global citizens and recognise that human rights are universal and unconditional, as well as understanding the importance of challenging injustice, inequality and poverty in the world.

It is a school which ... Encourages young people and adults to develop an understanding of each other’s personal and collective responsibilities to ensure everyone can enjoy the rights set out in the UNCRC.

The RRSA has 2 Levels, based on 18 criteria under 4 Standards: The school’s leadership places the UNCRC at the heart of planning, policies and practice The whole school community learns about the UNCRC The school develops a Rights Respecting Ethos Students are empowered to become active citizens and learners

Action Planning The Steering Group combines the information from the Audit and Focus Groups in order to complete an ACTION PLAN 1st Action Plan is sent to UNICEF Officer and RRSA Partner to check the school is on track School receives ‘Recognition of Commitment’ (email certificate ‘Working Towards Becoming a RRS’) Action Plan should be updated each term

Implementing Actions For example … Awareness raising for the whole school e.g. Assemblies, Form groups, presentations – Adds fot teaching staff, Junior Right of the Month assembly, Infants assembly UNCRC in a range of curriculum areas – ongoing – PSE/Geography links to Cornerstone Posters/displays about the UNCRC Training on the UNCRC and RRSA for all staff – Sue training, Anna one training course, Staff Adds Development of Classroom/School Charters – Junior School Charters in place and revisited.
