Western Primary School SUCCESS GROUP FORUM MEETING ~ THURSDAY 13th JULY 2017
SUCCESS GROUP FORUM MEETING – Tuesday 13th July 2017 With the summer holidays fast approaching, it was our last Forum Meeting for this academic year and the children have been extremely busy! As always, the children have a real sense of the importance of what they are getting involved in and how this can make Western even more of a Success Story. The children demonstrate a keenness to help and support the teachers, as well as generating their own ideas which they are always keen to share. Unfortunately, it will be the last meeting for our Y6s, who have played a highly valuable role in making the Success Groups such a success. We wish them all the best for their futures and thank them for all they have contributed over the years as Success Group representatives. You are all stars!
Stimulating This term the Stimulating Success Group have been reviewing their work throughout this year. This has included the Handwriting Award and Times Tables Challenge, which overall have been heralded a success! The incentives, of having handwriting displayed in the hall and the wristbands, were seen to be good motivators for improving both handwriting and spelling. Next term, they will be busy planning book scrutinies in spelling to ensure consistency across the school from Y1 to Y6.
Sports Day. Well done to the winners - Askew! Understanding The Understanding group have launched the new PE Kit this term which has been well received and is looking great! In addition to this, the group have helped Mr Fraser-Smith in the mammoth task of organising Sports Day. Their creative skills helped identify the different activities which the children took part in around the carousel. Continuing on a sporting theme, analysis of the PE Survey took place, which found that the overall favourite sports were football and tag rugby. In addition to this, they have undertaken an RE book scrutiny, where the standard of work was found to be extremely high. Next term, they plan to organise a Colour Run so watch this space! Sports Day. Well done to the winners - Askew!

Creating The Creating Success Group have been busy this term checking consistency in classrooms and delivering a survey. Displays have been scrutinised to ensure consistency across school from the Foundation Stage to Y6. They have also conducted a friendship survey, in conjunction with ‘The Junction’, to ask what children would do if they encountered different scenarios and experiences whilst at school. The children appear to be well-informed regarding the help which is available to them!
Committed The committed team have been busy this term delivering yet another highly successful ‘Science Day’. Y3/4 team members designed and produced posters to launch the event and Y6s got involved in actually running the experiments in the various classrooms. A fantastic morning was had by all (as the photos show!). In addition to this, children were surveyed to see how they felt about Science in school. Whilst the feedback was overwhelmingly positive, suggestions were made. As a result, more experiments and more independence led science is now going on in school.
Educating At last the application for our Bronze Award has been finalised and sent off. Fingers crossed all our hard work pays off and we will be ‘awarded’ for our efforts! In addition to that, we have been thinking about our ‘Geography Day’ and gathering together some ideas of what the day might look like. Finally, we have been developing some links with Harrogate Grammar School’s Geography Department. This is to share what we get involved in within our KS1 and KS2 lessons but also to look at where the children’s geography journey will take them in KS3. This may involve observing some lessons at HGS and some KS3 trainee geography teachers observing us! Next term, the Educating Team will be continuing to monitor and observe books and lessons to ensure that excellent geography continues to take place throughout school. The Educating teams’ ideas for our Geography Day.
Supporting Well done to all those who took part in Western’s Got Talent. This term, the finalists got to perform in assembly and special congratulations goes to our winners, Daniel Gal, Esme Potts and Benji Hollins. Following the success of this talent show, organised by the ‘talented’ Supporting Success Group, it is being discussed as to whether this should become an annual event so watch this space! In addition to these wonderful displays of talent, the Supporting team have been busy looking around school for evidence of SMSC and British Values; the results showed lots of evidence and examples. Next term, this team will be involved in organising a ‘Cultural Day’. An example of a British Values display board in KS1.

Well done to all the success children for their hard work this term. Striving The Striving Success Group have been extremely busy this term! As part of the school’s work to ensure children stay safe whilst on line, the Striving Success Group children have recently rolled out an ICT Day to Y2-Y4 children. This involved a number of workshops which the children rotated around. This included: Basics of Computing, Staying Safe On-line and Viruses and Malware. Such a lot of independent, hard work went into running this event so well done to the Striving Success Group children. A real achievement! Well done to all the success children for their hard work this term.
