Principles and Applications of Modest Dress

Introduction for many Christians, modesty is one of those topics that is acknowledged, then forgotten not a day goes by that we don’t make a judgment on how we will present ourselves to the world one of the first impressions we have of another’s character is their dress and demeanor how much thought goes into the choices that you make concerning modesty?

The Requirement of Modesty 1 Tim. 2:8-10 I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.

The Requirement of Modesty 1 Pet. 3:1-4 Do not let your adornment be merely outward-- arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel-- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.

Concerning Nakedness all can agree that nakedness is immodest however, by God’s standards, one can be clothed and still expose nakedness (Gen. 3:7, 10-11, 21) further clarification for the lower body (Ex. 20:26; 28:42-43)(Is. 47:2-3) nakedness of the upper body also associated with sin (Ezek. 23:3) nakedness as God has defined it has only one lawful place: in marriage (Prov. 5:15-20)
