A Free Online VHF/UHF Propagation Tool for Technical and Non-Technical Users Chuck Kelly Nautel Ltd Halifax, Nova Scotia

What’s the Nautel RF-Toolkit? As the title infers, it’s a set of tools designed to help both technical and non-technical people easily understand complex systems. The Radio Coverage Tool allows users to analyze possible transmitter locations, tower heights, antenna gains and transmitter power levels for coverage. While based on solid engineering principles, these tools cannot replace the services of a qualified consultant.

How does Radio Coverage Prediction Work? The Nautel Radio Coverage Tool is based on the Longley-Rice “ITS” algorithm, and covers most VHF/UHF frequencies. See: http://flattop.its.bldrdoc.gov/itm/itm_alg.pdf

How does Radio Coverage Prediction Work? The tool uses a digitized terrain database available from NASA called SRTM (Shuttle Radar Terrain Mapping). This database covers the entire earth with higher resolution in more populated areas.

How does Radio Coverage Prediction Work? There are two primary parts of the tool, coverage predictions over an area, and point to point analysis.

Where to find it: Radio Coverage Tool Look for the Radio Coverage Tool Logo on the Nautel home page Or visit: http://www.rftoolkit.net With the Radio Coverage Tool you can: See the estimated coverage of an FM or TV station plotted against a map, and save the generated map. See the estimated population living within the coverage area. Plot an STL path, and see if it is likely to be reliable.
