Agenda Introductions & areas of concern The work experience journey & planning Expectations of H&S EHCP/High Needs Difficult curriculum areas! Reporting & data management Quality standards Nobody is an expert here, we simply want to share our experiences & ideas to support each other in this growing field.

Introductions & support wanted! Who are you?! What areas of concern do you have? What would you find useful today?

The Work Experience Journey & The Learner journey

Work Experience Journey In one colour pen Indicate when you interact with the employer; what do you ask/provide, how is this communicated (phone/email/visit/letter etc.). Indicate when you interact with the learner; what do you ask/provide, how is this communicated. Indicate when you interact with the curriculum; what do you ask/provide, how is this communicated. Indicate when you interact with the ALS team; what do you ask/provide, how is this communicated. In another colour, add what you feel is missing/would like to do.

Learner Journey In the first colour pen Indicate when you speak to learners about work experience & how. Indicate when you speak to parents /carers about work experience & how. Indicate when you speak to local authorities about work experience & how. Indicate when work experience is conducted (e.g. induction week, block week, across the term, holidays etc.) In another colour, add what you feel is missing/would like to do.

Ideas for planning In two groups, summarise your ideas for planning 17/18 or 18/19! Place on walls for review over the breaks Feel free to take photos

Health & Safety Policy & practice Work Experience Health & Safety Policy & practice

Expectations of H&S Your paperwork – see packs Insurances & renewal dates Checks on company house Processes for risk assessing – see packs Safeguarding the employer Safeguarding the learner

Expectations of H&S How manage lone working situations How manage remote locations Procedures for an accident/incident on site Your policy

Work Experience Special Educational Needs(SEN) learners; Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCP); High Needs

EHCP/High Needs learners All are expected to have an external w/exp but sustainable placements are problematic and employers can focus upon disability rather than ability. It needs a different approach. Taken from the ‘Strategic Management and Inclusion; a resource for senior leaders’ by The Education & Training Foundation; Sourcing work placement and apprenticeships – Paper 5

EHCP/High Needs learners Consider specialist learning curriculum area and the main stream curriculum. What do you have in place? What is working? What isn’t working? What are you thinking about doing but haven’t actioned yet?

EHCP/High needs (specialist & main stream) Suggestions: EHCP costing Specialist work placement officers /Job coaches Employer Secure places appropriate for needs of learners Identify employers with a community involvement ethos Maintain good relationship with employers Increased regular contact with employer and learner Increased time spent in preparation & monitoring with the employer Provide guidance to managers and shop floor staff to ensure all feel supported Learner Focus upon what the learner is able to action; openness about learners needs Responsible, with curriculum, for all SEN learners being placed Support in the role until learner feels able to work independently Parent involvement; support for travel etc Agreement about the activity and daily structure between employer, specialist placement officer and learner. Regular meetings with ALS to ensure success Report On Work Experience including High Needs/EHCP placement

What about other groups? What suggestions do you have for: ALS Mental Health difficulties Young Carers Young Parents – nursery funding, travel? Looked after/in Care Poor attendees – action taken Inappropriate behaviour – action taken

Difficult curriculum areas for placement Work Experience Difficult curriculum areas for placement

Hard to place areas! In groups of 3, list as many ideas to Ensure these areas are safe & appropriately risk assessed Maximise number of learners in meaningful work experience Address DBS/CSCS card requirements & cost Engineering Science Construction

Work Experience Data and reporting

Data collection How do you impact measure with the learner? How is this reported? How do you gather feedback from the learner & employer? What happens to this feedback?

Reporting –see packs How do you market your successes? What do you currently report on? What is the frequency? Who is this shared with? What is this data used to inform? What action is taken for under performance?
