Compelling Question: Could the Industrial Revolution have happened without the children of Britain? (THE BIG QUESTION) Step 1: What kind of questions could we ask in order to answer the question above? In the next two minutes, I want your group to complete the following: Write down as many questions as you can that could help us gain evidence for our compelling question Do not stop to discuss, judge or answer the questions. Write down every question exactly as it is stated.  Step 2: Next, categorize your questions. In the next 3 minutes I want you to categorize your questions into closed ended and open-ended questions. C = Closed-ended questions can be answered with “yes” or “no” or with one word. O= Open-ended questions require an explanation and cannot be answered with “yes” or “no” or with one word. Step 3: Prioritize your questions. In the next 3 minutes I want your group to choose the three most important questions from your list. Mark them with an “X.” Last, what was your reason for selecting those three? Step 4: Share

Day 3

Supporting Question #3 Were children good workers?

Day 4

Your Closing Argument Could the Industrial Revolution have happened without the children of Britain? Construct an argument (essay, poster, detailed outline, song) that addresses the compelling question (The BIG ?) using specific claims and evidence from historical sources while acknowledging competing views. However you fashion your argument, you must create a thesis statement including 3 claims: EX: The Industrial Revolution would not have happened without the children of Britain, due to _________, ___________, and ___________. EX: The Industrial Revolution would have happened without the help of children in Britain, because _______,________. and ________. Evidence to back these claims will be presented in your finished product (essay, poster, detailed outline, song).
