Early challenges to divine right rule Daily Learning Goal: I can analyze an excerpt from Here Be Dragons and analyze the challenge that was presented to the power of divine right kings through the Magna Carta. Warm up – read the introduction to the secondary source. Use it to answer the questions: 1. What problems did King John of England face in this time period? 2. What can you infer (guess) about King John based on this introduction? Early challenges to divine right rule

Divine Right Rule - Background Divine Right Rule was the idea that a King was chosen to rule by God, and thus could not have his authority challenged by any human. Nobles were knights or other upper class men who were given land by the king which they could then rule. While they were in the upper social classes, they had few recognized rights due to the absolute power of the King.

Here Be Dragons - Context The story is a novel about the period of King John of England’s rule. (Secondary Source) Read the source silently to yourself. Underline sections which show you King John’s or his son Richard’s beliefs about the power of a King. Re-read and double underline phrases that show aspects of the conflict between King John and the Nobles.
