Warm Up The warm up worksheet is on the podium. Do the odds only. Answers will be up shortly. DO NOT LOSE THIS WORKSHEET!!! After the warm up, begin the station discovery lesson. Your work will be collected and graded!

Warm Up Given: (3, -5) and (-2, 1) on a line. Find each of the following: Slope of the line Point-Slope equation of the line Slope-Intercept equation of the line Standard equation of the line. x-intercept of the line y-intercept of the line

Questions?

Parallel and Perpendicular Lines Objective: To learn how to… 1) determine whether two lines are parallel or perpendicular, 2) write the equation for a line parallel or perpendicular to a given line and a given point. parallel lines – are lines in the same plane that do not intersect. perpendicular lines – are lines in the same plane that intersect to form right angles.

Parallel Lines Two nonvertical lines are parallel if they have the same slope and different y-intercepts. Any two vertical lines are parallel.

Example 1 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line. (4 , 1) y = 3x – 2

Example 2 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line. (-5 , -8) y = - 3 5 x – 2

Example 3 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is parallel to the given line. (6 , -2) 3x + 2y = 8

Perpendicular Lines Two lines are perpendicular if the product of their slopes is -1. The slopes are opposite & reciprocal of each other. A vertical and a horizontal line are perpendicular.

Example 4 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line. (3 , 2) y = 1 4 x + 7

Example 5 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line. (2 , 4) y = - 5 7 x – 2

Example 6 Write an equation of a line that contains the given point and is perpendicular to the given line. (9 , -3) y = 3x + 8
