‘Surrey Military Young Carers Matter’

Surrey Military Profile 5,000 Army Regulars 170 Reservists Veteran Population unknown, although 22,000 people leave the military each year. The size of the ex-service community in UK (defined as veterans and their dependents) is 10.5 million people. 4.8 million people are veterans (4 million in England) and 5.37 million people are dependents The majority of the serving Armed Forces’ primary health needs are met by the Ministry of Defence. Although it is recognised that greater responsibility for secondary care will be a responsibility of the CCGs.

Military and Veteran Carers Service community is more likely to have some caring responsibility 23% of those aged 16-64 have a caring responsibility, compared with 12% nationally 1:5 of the ex-Service community has some unpaid responsibility as a carer for a family member, friend or neighbour, which is equivalent to around 990,000. 1:10 of all carers in the ex-Service community agree that they struggle to cope with their caring responsibilities; equivalent to around 110,000 people

Military Young Carers The Hidden Carers: A military young carer is someone between the ages of 5 -18 years of age, who helps look after a relative who has a condition, such as a disability, illness, mental health condition, or a drug or alcohol problem, who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces. UK has 170,000 Military Children but……. No data is held on how many of these children are caring Combatstress - military dependent child 1: 3.2 veterans Combatstress has 6,004 military personnel on their books making a potential for 2,500 Veteran MYCs. “I wish army people did not have to move” “I wish soldiers would get home safe!” “I wish I did not have to move schools” “I wish I could stay in one place”

Surrey Young Carers – Developing a Military Young Carers Service In partnership with the Surrey Civilian Military Partnership Board we are planning to launch a dedicated MYC Service to improve the identification and understanding of MYCs and provide tailored support to their needs. For the purpose of this service we define a MYC as any child under the age of 18 years caring for someone who is either existing service personnel, reservists or veteran
