Irma rolls through Florida

Hurricane Irma dropped to a Category 1 storm early Monday after it tore through southwest Florida and left more than 4 million customers without power. Despite its weakening as it passes over land, Irma remains a monster pushing strong winds and flooding in the Southeast. Irma is projected to move into north Florida and toward Georgia over the next 24 hours. The hurricane hit southwest Florida on Sunday, downing power lines, uprooting trees and turning streets into rivers. It battered Florida's lower half, leaving a trail of tornadoes and storm-surge flooding as its core slowly moved inland. The massive storm triggered evacuation orders for 5.6 million people. Florida Gov. Rick Scott has continued to say that Irma's wrath is unprecedented, warning that storm surges could be deadly. This is the first year on record that the continental United States has had two Category 4 hurricane landfalls in the same year. Last month, Hurricane Harvey devastated much of coastal Texas and killed more than 70 people.

In Other News Ninety people are now confirmed dead after the most powerful earthquake to hit Mexico in a century struck off the country's southern coast. It was measured as a magnitude-8.1 quake. Due to Hurricane Irma Disney World has closed for the sixth time since they opened in 1971. It did so in 1999 for Hurricane Floyd, 2004 for Hurricane Frances, 2004 for Hurricane Jeanne, and last year for Hurricane Matthew as well. The park's only non-hurricane closure was after the September 11 terrorist attacks. North Korea said in a statement that the United States will pay a "due price" if harsh sanctions against North Korea are agreed at a United Nations Security Council meeting in New York Monday. It went on to say, "The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the US the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history.“ The UN Security Council is due to vote Monday on new restrictions on the rogue state, including an oil embargo, a ban on North Korean laborers and an asset freeze on leader Kim Jong Un. Despite the vocal backing of the US, which proposed the sanctions, they could be vetoed by Russia and China which have expressed skepticism about the harsh measures. The US and its allies have been calling for stern measures against North Korea following the country's latest nuclear test, its largest yet, which took place just over a week ago. EAGLES WIN!!!!!
