Bridget Riley The Op Artist!

Bridget Riley Bridget Riley was born in Norwood, London in 1931. Bridget Riley is one of Britain's most famous artists. Since the mid-1960s she has been highly celebrated for her distinctive, optically vibrant and challenging paintings. Riley is an Op Artist

Op Art Op Art (1950 - 1965) Op Art relies on optical illusions and is sometimes called optical art or retinal art. Op painters and sculptors used geometric designs in order to create feelings of movement sometimes in vibrant colours and other times in simply black and white.

What effect has Riley created here?

Can you feel the movement in this piece?

Is there movement or a shimmer to this piece?

Riley also like colour, not just black and white

Are these lines different to the first three pictures?

Your Turn… Trace around your open hand. Use a black marker or twistable to draw straight lines across the shape. Make a curved line when you reach the outline of your hand. Repeat the process in various colours. Try using different coloured paper or a different shape!!

The Finished Look… Tip!! Use a clear ruler to draw in the straight lines first. Then just join them with the curved lines!!

Or… Draw a simple shape on a piece of white paper. Use a ruler to draw straight lines across your shape (vertically or horizontally) Colour or paint the sections in contrasting colours Make sure the same colour never touches!

Why not try…
