Writing Narrative Essays Dr. Cass Harrington

Today’s Learning Target I can write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events.

How Do I Identify the Elements of a Narrative Passage or Essay? from “Mrs. Majeska and Sara Duck” by Ethel Pochocki 1 There once was an old woman who lived on the edge of a city and the edge of a woods. Her house sat right smack in the middle of where one ended and the other began. Mrs. Majeska, for that was her name, was quite content with this, for either way she turned, she had the best of both worlds.

DEVELOPMENT Dialogue Pacing Description Details from the passage Presents a clear picture of: Experiences (HOW) Events (WHAT) Setting (WHERE, WHEN) Characters (WHO)

Focus and Organization Provides relevant Point of View Organized sequence of events Conclusion reflects on: Events/experiences Shares why the event or experiences are important Shares what the narrator learned from the experiences

Language Precise, sophisticated language Sophisticated sentences Simple Compound Complex Compound/complex Uses strong transitional words and phrases

Conventions Uses sophisticated Standard English May contain a few errors
