World issues September 25 Goal: to use empathy to understand the personal legends of girls around the world and the difficult situations they are in. To understand the importance of education for lifting up girls and their families, communities, and countries. World issues September 25 AGENDA: Thank you note to Dillon Review Summative Assessment for “Girl Rising.” Continue “Girl Rising” video and writing

Period One Norms Don’t distract while others are working. Turn in work on time. Be respectful. No hateful comments, no roasting. Listen to everyone’s ideas, thoughts, and opinions. Don’t bash other’s ideas and make them feel badly. Actively participate, don’t shy away. Value that other people have opinions that differ from yours. Follow the norms! Listen to understand and not to respond. Be patient with each other and the teacher. Keep side talking to a minimum. Be responsible.

Period 2 Class Norms Be honest about what you know and don’t know. Ask questions! Be quiet during work time. Respect others’ opinions even if you don’t agree. Disagree respectfully. Encourage others’ learning. Try not to take things personally. Don’t talk over others. “Three before me.” Don’t dominate the conversation. Listen to understand, not to respond. Keep an open mind and be willing to change your mind. Don’t have side conversations. Don’t let other people’s actions ruin your success. Don’t say what you think other people want to hear, say what you think is true. Vegas rule.

Homework Bring your World News Article Report to class on Wednesday. Summative out loud reports: Hannah, Camille, Guillermo (period 1) Tyda, Julia, Dominic (period 2)

Thank you note to Dillon Today’s Date Dear Dillon: Thank him for coming to our class. Tell him at least one thing you learned. Thank him again. Sincerely, Your name (write it legibly)

“Girl Rising” Today we will watch the stories of the following girls: Azmera, Ethiopia Senna, Peru Amina, Afghanistan

What is her personal legend? Who is the main character? What is the setting? What is the conflict? What are the barriers to the character getting what she wants/needs? What happens at the end of the story? Is the problem resolved? What have you learned or what was the impact of this story on you?

Summative Assessment Which girl’s story affected you the most? Explain your answer and support it with evidence from the film. How does educating this particular girl benefit her, her family, and her community? What is the current situation for girls education in the country this girl is from?
