Middle Colonies (New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware) Climate/ Geography: fertile soil, flat land, swift rivers, wide valleys, warmer Settlers: Quakers, Dutch, French, Germans, Scot-Irish; diverse
Major Economic Activities: Farming grains, livestock, cash crops, mining, trade Local Government: Mixture of town meetings and county governments
Southern Colonies (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia) Climate/Geography: Rich, fertile soil, broad coastal plains, tidewater, backcountry (Located in or near the Appalachian Mountains in the far western part of most of the colonies) Settlers: English aristocrats, planters, small farmers, slaves
Major Economic Activity: plantations: tobacco, rice, indigo; slavery, fewer crafts and industry Local Government: Counties were basic unit; sheriffs and justice of the peace appointed by governor
