Thesis Statement The United States actions to stop the genocide in Darfur have helped to advance United Nations peace keeping efforts but has not totally stopped the conflict because of a compromise of humanitarian and diplomatic considerations.

History The conflict started in February of 2003 Between the Sudan Liberation Army and Justice and Equality Movement against the government and the Janjaweed militia Conflict started because Black Africans felt that the government oppressed them in favor of Arabs Janjaweed militia accused of “cleansing Black Africans” from large territories in Sudan

History (cont.) Janjaweed kill men, rape women, and raid houses More than 2.7 million have lost their homes and live in camps The US and human right groups have said genocide is taking place UN investigation team in 2005 concluded that war crimes had been committed, but these war crimes didn not include genocide Reports concluded the conflict in Darfur has been stabilizing, armed conflict in the area is nearly over

America’s View UN finds out about the killings in 2003 America finds out in 2004 Support groups like “Dollars for Darfur” were created Invisible Children helped create the groups

The Support Groups “Dollars for Darfur” Invisible Children George Clooney and Mia Farrow

UN Solutions 2004: Began relocating refugees to the first safe camps Joint Communique was signed by UN and Sudan pledged to end conflict in Darfur Pledged to help African Union deploy ceasefire monitors and provide humanitarian aid July 31st passed Resolution 1769 - deployed more than 26,000 troops and police to Darfur

United States Assisting Darfur Ceasefire agreement signed & peace talks given African Mission in Sudan Reinforce weapon restrictions & U.S. ban against military assist to Sudan Start the North-South comprehensive Peace agreement

Violating Human Rights Article 3: everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security Article 5: no one should be subject to torture or treated unfairly by brutal or degrading treatment Article 7: equal protection against being discriminated Article 9: no one should be sent away

The After Math War is at a stand still for now Janjaweed stocking up on weapons Fear of more war

Conclusion U.S. actions have helped to advance UN peace keeping efforts but has not totally stopped the conflict. U.S. has imposed economic sanctions to provide incentives to end the conflict. UNAMID concluded that the Darfur conflict has substantially subsided and stability exists in the region with general elections scheduled in 2010. President Obama has resisted demands for direct and greater U.S. involvement and insists that Sudan should determine its own future with oversight from the UN. We agree with President Obama’s position because we do not want to Sudan to become another Iraq where the U.S. has a great military presence.
