LESSON THREE MANAGING YOUR EMOTIONS CHAPTER SEVEN LESSON THREE MANAGING YOUR EMOTIONS

OBJECTIVES EXPLAIN HOW TO OVERCOME NEGATIVE THINKING WITH POSITIVE SELF-TALK. EXPLAIN HOW DEFENSE MECHANISMS CAN BE HEALTHY OR UNHEALTHY. DESCRIBE TWO INFLUENCES ON EMOTIONAL HEALTH.

BELLRINGER THINK OF SOMETHING THAT MAKES YOU ANGRY. THEN, THINK OF ANOTHER THING THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY. WRITE THESE TWO THINGS ON YOUR PAPER.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION WHEN IS AN EMOTION UNHEALTHY?

DEFINITIONS USING POSITIVE SELF TALK UNPLEASANT EMOTIONS CAN BECOME UNHEALTHY IF THEY ARE NOT DEALT WITH PROPERLY. SOMETIMES, YOU CAN DEAL WITH UNPLEASANT EMOTIONS BY SIMPLY USING POSITIVE SELF TALK.

DEFINITIONS STRESS IS THE BODY’S RESPONSE TO NEW OR UNPLEASANT SITUATIONS. HEALTHY DEFENSE MECHANISMS HELP YOU DEAL WITH EMOTIONS IN A USEFUL WAY. FOR EXAMPLE, HUMOR CAN HELP RELIEVE STRESS BY FOCUSING ON THE AMUSING PARTS OF A TOUGH SITUATION. UNHEALTHY DEFENSE MECHANISMS CAUSE YOU TO IGNORE YOUR EMOTIONS OR THE ISSUES THAT CAUSE THEM.

DEFINITIONS A TRIGGER IS A PERSON, SITUATION, OR EVENT THAT INFLUENCES EMOTIONS. ONE WAY TO DEAL WITH UNPLEASANT EMOTIONS IS TO AVOID SITUATIONS THAT CAUSE THEM. YOU CAN ALSO SEEK OUT SITUATIONS THAT TRIGGER PLEASANT EMOTIONS. ONE WAY TO REDUCE THE IMPACT OF STRESSFUL EMOTIONS IS TO IMPROVE YOUR SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH. FILLING YOUR LIFE WITH PEOPLE, ACTIVITIES, AND HEALTHY HABITS CAN IMPROVE SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH.
