Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt

1st Dynasty -Menes Founding King of the 1st Dynasty Ruled between 3100-2850 B.C.E First Pharaoh to unify upper and lower Egypt into one Kingdom During his reign he expanded his kingdom and developed commercial trade links

Old Kingdom -Khufu Khufu lived from 2589-2566 B.C.E Most Famous pharaoh of the Old Kingdom He reigned for around 24 years. Khufu is most remembered for building Great Pyramid of Giza. Khufu had many sons but the one chosen to be his successor was Djedefre.

Middle Kingdom Mentuhotep II defeated uprisings to reunite Egypt around 2050 B.C. beginning the Middle Kingdom rule Toward the end of the Middle Kingdom foreign attacks by the Hyksos from Southwest Asia brought Egypt under foreign rule for 200 years Mid – 1500s B.C. Ahmose of Thebes drove the Hyksos out of Egypt Ahmose declared himself pharaoh and ushered in a new rule of Egypt

New Kingdom Ahmose’s rule started the New Kingdom period in ancient Egypt Lasted from 1550 -1050 B.C. Past invasions caused Egypt to increase there land possession to keep invaders out by seizing trade routes and Egypt became an empire

Queen Hatshepsut The wife of Tuthmose II Tuthmose II died young and left his throne to his young son Tutmose III Hatshepsut ruled as her step-son’s co-regent She called herself the king of Egypt

Ramses the Great Came to power in the 1200s B.C. His reign over Egypt was one of the longest in Egyptian history Fought against the Hittites from Asia Minor Built a series of forts along the western Nile to protect from invasion The New Kingdom came to an end about 50 years after Ramses the Great’s death

Tutankhamen Most well known or popular pharaoh One of the first tombs that was discovered undisturbed Taught us the most about Egyptian burial practices and beliefs His tomb was filled with treasure
