Tuesday, February 7th Entry Task How is it possible for a mountain range to continually be pushed up and not get any taller? Schedule: Volcano Notes Objective: I can identify different types of volcanoes Homework: Questions 1-6, page 269, IQIA on ISN 8 Please have on desk: ISN open to 8.2 vocab and RSG Last week’s entry tasks

Volcano Notes A volcano is a place (usually a mountain) where magma reaches the earth’s surface.

Lava- Vent- Magma Chamber Volcano Anatomy Crater- Erupted magma The opening in the volcano Pit at the top of the volcano Magma Chamber

Four things that can come out of a volcano

1. Lava: molten rock that flows or oozes onto the earth’s surface

2. Lahars: flows of mud, rock and water

3. Pyroclastic flows: hot avalanches of ash and gas

4. Tephra: gases and fragments of rock and lava sent high into the sky

Three Types of Volcanoes 1. A cinder cone volcano has steep sides and is made from explosive eruptions of small particles of rock that form a loose pile of volcanic rock fragments.

Three Types of Volcanoes An example of a cinder cone volcano is Paricutin in Mexico.

Three Types of Volcanoes 2. A shield volcano is built up of many slow thin layers of hardened lava.

Three Types of Volcanoes An example of a shield volcano is Mauna Loa Volcano in Hawaii. It is the worlds largest shield volcano.

Three Types of Volcanoes 3. A composite volcano is usually cone-shaped and is built up of layers of hardened lava and rock fragments.

Three Types of Volcanoes Mount St. Helens is a Typical composite volcano.

Three Classifications of Volcanoes: Active Volcano: A volcano which has erupted recently or might erupt soon.

Example: Cerro Azul, Chile Ulawun, Papua New Guinea Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland

Three Classifications of Volcanoes: 2. Dormant volcano: A volcano that has been quiet for a long time, but still has signs it may erupt again.

Example: Mauna Kea, Hawaii Mount Hood, Oregon Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Three Classifications of Volcanoes: Extinct volcano: A volcano that has not erupted for thousands of years and cannot erupt again.

Example: Mount Kulal, Kenya Huascarán, Peru Mt Buninyong, Australia

8.2 Questions Answer questions 1-6 from page 269 in your textbook Answer using full sentences, IQIA.

Wednesday, February 8th Entry Task Explain how Crater Lake in Oregon formed (hint: re-read page 268) Schedule: 8.2 Quiz Fire mountains of the west Objective: I can demonstrate my understanding of volcanoes Homework: No homework Please have on desk: ISN open to Volcano notes & questions

Thursday, February 9th Schedule: How volcanoes affect Earth Entry Task Write down the definition and match it with the correct term. Definitions: Motion that transfers heat within a material The layer formed by Earth’s crust and the very top of the mantle Underwater mountain ranges found where the ocean floor is spreading. Terms: mid-ocean ridges, lithosphere, plate tectonics, convection current Schedule: How volcanoes affect Earth Objective: I can explain how volcanoes affect Earth Homework: Complete the chart and RSG Please have on desk: ISN

As you read 8.3 complete the chart Land (Geosphere) Air (Atmosphere) Water (Hydrosphere) Ways Volcanoes affect Each sphere. (Must have at least 6, may have more if needed) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Friday, February 10th Entry Task Compare and Contrast: What do geysers and deep-sea vents that form chimneys have in common? How are they different? Schedule: Mt Rainier Lahar 8.3 Vocabulary & Questions Objective: I will analyze how the shape of land near Mt Rainier affects mudflow Homework Finish vocab & ?s Please have on desk: ISN open to 8.3 notes & RSG
