Chapter 3 Weather and Climate

How are weather and climate different from each other? Short-term changes in the air for a given place and time Climate A region’s average weather conditions over a long period

How does sun and location, wind, water, and mountains affect climate? Energy from the sun heats the planet with different locations receiving different amounts of sunlight (caused by Earth’s tilt, movement, and shape) Sun and Location moves heat around the earth, affecting how warm a place is makes different areas either warmer or cooler Wind moves heat around the earth, affecting how warm or wet a place is Water Influences temperature and precipitation As elevation increases, temperature decreases and climate changes Mountains

Average Precipitation World Climate Regions Region Where is it located? Average Temperatures Average Precipitation Plant Life Extra Info Tropical    On and near the equator  -Tropical rain forest -Tall grasses and scattered trees Temperate  East and West coast at middle and upper latitudes  -woodland and grassland -Forest Land  Mediterranean – Mild winters and cool, breezy Summers Continental – Long, cold, freezing winters and blistering hot Summers Polar  Higher latitudes and polar regions  -Northern evergreen forests -Moss, lichens, low shrubs -or No Vegetation at all (Antarctica) Dry -Center at 30 degrees latitude -also at the borders of desert land areas  Cactus Highland  High mountain regions  Forest and Tundra

Tropical (Subtropics) Polar (Sub-Arctic) Temperate Tropical (Humid and Savanna) Tropical (Subtropics) Warm Temperate Polar (Ice Cap)
