a walk through iasi

we start our walk at the most important landmark PALACE OF CULTURE Palace of Culture is an iconic building, built between 1906 - 1925 in the area of the former Royal Palace. The building is listed in historic documents. Today a monument, the Palace of Culture is the National Museum Complex located in "Moldova", which includes the Museum of History (1916), the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia (1943), the Museum of Art (1860), the Museum of Science and Technology "Stefan Procopiu” (1955), and the Center for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (1975). County Library "Gheorghe Asachi" (1920) is in the northeast wing of the palace. Throughout time, the whole royal court developed in the entire the area of the city, (attested from 1434). In 1806 - 1812, Prince Alexander Moruzi built an impressive neoclassical style palace. Damaged by fire, it will be rebuilt as the Royal Palace of Prince Michael Sturdza in 1841 to 1843. After the Union of 1859 and after moving the capital to Bucharest, the Royal Palace becomes the Administrative Palace. Several fires at the end of the nineteenth century continue to affect the building, and in the early twentieth century it is taken the decision to reconstruct, instead of restoring the old palace.

Now we visit the palace Roznovanu The building houses the present residence of Science Hall. The impressive interior with sumptuousness and splendor, was built in the decades 7-10 of the eighteenth century and was restored between 1830 and 1833 by the famous architect Gustav Freywald, who designed the Metropolitan Cathedral in Iasi. Overall, the architecture and the interior frescoes and statues that adorned the outside in 1830, belongs to the neoclassical style palace with baroque ornaments-electico. Until 1891 when the state sold the building, it was the residence of the Rosetti family – Roznovanu, the most powerful and influential family of Moldovian political landscape of the city. As one of the most important houses in the era of Iasi, it has hosted numerous personalities and has seen significant historical events.

The Catholic Cathedral Until the construction of the present church, faithful Roman Catholics from Iasi (the capital of the Principality of Moldavia) prayed in a wooden church. Franciscan Church, built of wood in 1753, was burnt in October 1766, and then, the Prefects Apostolic of Moldovia tried to get permission to build a church in stone. After the 1989 Revolution there were built in Iasi two Catholic churches: St. Therese of the Child Jesus Church (consecrated in 1995) and St. Anthony of Padua Church (consecrated in 1996). The two parishes have caused the decrease in the jurisdiction of the Parish "Assumption". In 1992 began the construction of a new cathedral. It was consecrated by Bishop Peter Gherghel on 1 November 2005. On September 15, 2008 the Catholic Cathedral was inaugurated at the Cave of Our Lady of Lourdes. A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was placed in the cave.

Dosoftei house Dosoftei house, called the House with arcades, is an old building in Iasi, built in the eighteenth century. It is located in the center city, near the old Royal Court, between the Palace of Culture and Church “St. Nicholas”. The building currently hosts the oldest literature section of Iaşi Romanian Literature Museum, founded in 1970. The printing press from Dosoftei House was included in the list of historical monuments in Iasi in 2004

The metropolitan Cathedral The Metropolitan church of Moldovia and Bucovina is an administrative unit of the Romanian Orthodox Church. It is currently headed by Theophanes Savu, bearing the title of Archbishop of Iaşi and Metropolitan of Moldovia and Bucovina. The Cathedral was established between 1381-1386 and recognized by the Patriarchate of Constantinople in 1401, when it was led by Bishop Joseph Musat. Metropolitan headquarters was originally Radauti, being moved from Suceava in 1401, and in the seventeenth century, in the city, where it remains today.

Three Hierarchs Monastery Three Hierarchs Monastery in Iasi is a valuable architectural monument in Romania. It is located in the traditional center of Iasi, the Stefan cel Mare Boulevard - former Royal streets. The Three Hierarchs Church was built by Prince Vasile Lupu, between 1637 -1639, the royal necropolis, reflecting the founder’s aspiration to Byzantine world, combining traditional structures and forms of precious metals and stone decoration.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University The University of Iasi, a modern educational institution, was founded on October 26, 1860. The University is the successor of the old Academy established by Vasile Lupu in 1640, followed, in 1707, by the Royal Academy, founded by Antiochus Cantemir. The actual building of the university was built between 1893 and 1897 by architect Louis Blanc and inaugurated in the presence of King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth. The building is a combination of classical and baroque styles, the monumental entrance leading to the famous "Hall of Lost Steps", decorated with paintings by Sabin Balasa. As the oldest university in Romania, it is a higher education institution with both a traditional and modern university which, by the achievements accomplished in an educational and scientific area, gained recognition both nationally and internationally.

Copou park Copou garden (or Copou park) is the oldest park in Iasi. The park dates back to the early part of the nineteenth century (planning began in the years 1833 to 1834), its center being arranged in an “Obelisk of lions”, originally called “Monument of constitutional law,” raised to honor George Asachi and the reforms introduced by him in Moldovia. The old “aristocratic street Copou” is now Copou district, situated on the hill with the same name.
